note
[edit]The phrase is used to hang an adjective on, usually either long or, as in the Victoria Wood example, short battle with cancer. What does one replace it with? Experience of cancer? Period of cancer? We can see how the cliché has become popular. I wonder if anyone knows a reliable source that discusses the linguistic side. Rothorpe (talk) 02:22, 21 April 2016 (UTC)
Several years ago The Onion had a go at this, highlighting one man's cowardly collapse. Not in good taste but making a point! Bashereyre (talk) 06:30, 21 April 2016 (UTC)

Does this belong in wikipedia
[edit]Looks like it belongs in a dictionary of cliches eg wiktionary. Why is it in wikipedia ? Are there precedents in WP ? No List of cliches to see. The article seems to be discussing the cliche rather than the battle or the psychology of coping with cancer. - Rod57 (talk) 12:10, 21 April 2016 (UTC)
- You are right that the article is discussing the cliche (as well as defining it). That's what an encyclopedia should do and what makes the article encyclopedic. War on terror is comparable where the usefulness of the term has been widely debated. There's a category for cliches which is well populated. You could create the list but I think the category is sufficient in this case. Philafrenzy (talk) 12:46, 21 April 2016 (UTC)

Depression
[edit]I'm not sure the reference about "battle with depression" was going to the same conclusion as the editor who added that it could be argued that mental will can defeat depression. The author of the reference only improved his depression through pharmaceuticals '''tAD''' (talk) 21:08, 24 July 2016 (UTC)
- Agreed, your edit is not unreasonable. Edwardx (talk) 22:24, 24 July 2016 (UTC)
