I object to the sentence:

"In the Battle on the Ice, the combatants are described as fighting on horseback, although the later Vikings and Anglo-Saxons who told of this battle in their legends would fight on foot."

Not only because I think its more correct to call scandinavians for scandinavians and not vikings, but mainly becuase its simply not true. Scandinavians used horses according to Tacitus, Jordanes and later historians.

Erhm, I think that's in regard to the method of transportation of the people fighting, not the people telling the story. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.9.12.16 (talk) 03:17, 1 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Please move the section "The epic Beowulf".

[edit]

The battle on the ice of lake Vanern is accepted as a historical event; some of its detail are in dispute amoung various sources. The epic Beowulf contains a fictionalized account of the battle. The Norse sagas are intended to be a historical account of events. The section "The epic Beowulf" appears first on the page. This could implies to the reader that it is a primary source. I am guessing that the actual reason for placing this first was because most people first learn of this historical event from its appearence in Beowulf. However this does not make Beowulf a primary source. Instead it is a referencing source that is using the battle for its own literary purposes and is under no obligation to be accurate. Before I had changed it, the first sentence the second section "Norse sagas" had read, "In the Norse sagas, changes have appeared." this further implied to the reader that Beowulf is the primary source. I have altered the opening to both of these sections to better clarify their relationship to the topic. I must confess that I am new to editing in Wikipedia. If anyone knows how to move an entire sction to another part of a page please do so. The section "The epic Beowulf" should be place below either "Norse sagas" or "Archaeology", I will leave it to others to determine this finer point of page construction. Thanks in advance. It's actually not considered a historical event in modern Swedish history writing. The sagas are much too late to stand up to critical examination, and if it were not for the corroboration from the epic of Beowulf, this "battle" would be classified together with stories such as that of King Frode without any further comment.

Understood. Thanks! Dwightboone (talk) 20:19, 17 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
