[edit]This is new to me. Guess his men were not included in casualties?

Four days of artillery prep
[edit]The article says: "After four days of around-the-clock artillery bombardment, with fighter-bomber air strikes being conducted every five to 10 minutes <...> the storming of Komsomolskoye began". This is a modified quote from the Army article (which is itself a bit chaotic in its record of the battle). But the Army article does not state anywhere that the described artillery strikes were kept up for four days specifically, or preceded the assault. Instead, the back-and-forth troop movements, artillery/air strikes, and mopping-up missions were intermittent throughout the battle, with skirmishes, counterattacks, breakout attempts, a ceasefire etc.
So, this introductory sentence sounds good as a Warhammer-like story (and is probably lifted from a dramatized article), but it quickly makes the rest of the dry, actual description confusing, because the battle was not structured in this way and stretched over many confusing days. In fact, as far as I can gather, participants were bitter that the fire support was not enough (which led to losses in unsuccessful infantry attacks), the escalation of force was too slow, the perimeter blockade was extremely permeable, and the decisive push was achieved too late to finish off the Gelayev main force.
(Frankly, the Army article is far from an ideal source overall. It looks more like a collection of quotes from media articles and bold conjectures like this: "While we know little as to the exact casualty figures, it is most likely - given the experience, motivation, and tenacity of the Chechens, and the comparative inexperience of Russian units employed - that the Russian losses were several times those of the defenders." Even the most liberal, damning version of Federal complete losses (~450 combatants) in a highly critical sources, is less than the insurgent total losses.) AyeBraine (talk) 04:30, 24 May 2019 (UTC)
