Runciman's outdated and vague pronouncement that this battle was inconclusive no longer stands. Bernard Hamilton's far more detailed study of the battle has concluded that it was a victory for the Franks and a Muslim defeat. Edits have been made along with appropriate citation.
Please note that this article could just as easily been called Crusader Campaign of 1182 or something similar. Historians disagree on whether there was a battle at all. I just needed some name to pin this on. The running battle (skirmish) was fought near Belvoir Castle (Kaukab al-Hawa) in the summer of 1182, hence the title. William of Tyre (XXII.16) makes it clear that the commanders at the battle were Baldwin of Ramlah, Balian of Ibelin, and Hugh of Saint Omer.
