United States Victory?

[edit]

The 10th Minnesota was routed by the Dakota here. I hardly see how this can be called a United States victory. Jbt89 (talk) 04:56, 19 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

A "rout" according to wikipedia, is "panicked, disorderly and undisciplined retreat of troops from a battlefield, following a collapse in a given unit's command authority, unit cohesion and combat morale." Strout's men almost let panic overtake them, but all accounts of the battle say that order was maintained in the withdraw to Hutchinson. The 10th did not suffer a collapse during the battle and retreated in a relatively disciplined way considering the circumstances. Ironmarshal1805 (talk) 19:46, 19 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
