1000 ft increase in altitude
[edit]This page claimed the Batasia loop gains 1000 ft
I've been there (OR, but this is a talk page) and the gain at the loop is only about 100 ft or so depending on what you call 'the loop'.
The DHR climbs from 313 ft to 7867 or nearly. the summit is outside Ghum, walking distance from the loop for an old lady with a backpack. But there's no way the loop itself raises the line 1000 ft. Anniepoo (talk) 07:32, 18 July 2009 (UTC)
Here's a link to an image. You can see it's not 1000 ft. [[1]]
This page claims it's 1000 ft, but the wording is quite ambiguous. I'd believe the section of the line from Darjeeling to Ghum raises 1000 ft. [[2]]
A map provided by the DHRS lists track altitude at Ghum as7407, the Darjeeling station at 6847, which is 560 ft. This same map notes a point to one side of the track marked 'summit 7867', which is almost 1000 ft. An inset detail map of the loop is marked '7175'. I'm skeptical, having been there several times, that the rise is 300 ft in this section of the line. (The map has other suspicious features, it shows the Siliguri-Sukhna distance to be the same as the distance horizontally during the RR's climb (which it isn't, the trip takes a couple hours, while the section from Sukhna to Siliguri could be walked in 20 minutes).

puffery
[edit]Removed as puffery. I seriously doubt 'panoramic view' of Darj is accurate. I don't believe Darj is actually visible from the loop. What I removed:
From the Batasia Loop one can get a panoramic view of Darjeeling town with the Kanchenjunga and other snowy mountains in the back-drop.It is a pleasant and delightful descent from Ghoom - the highest railway station in the world.
