Citations
[edit]For some random reason I found myself investigating citations for Embry's awards. I have not been able to track down in the LOndon Gazette his AFC nor the third bar to the DSO nor two of his MIDs. The AFC first appears in the LG after his name in 1927. Can anyone help? - Well according to the ODNB article, his AFC was in 1926, hasn't helped me find it though. In my experience mentions are always the hardest thing to track down, unlike most other awards they some times seem to appear as surname, rank initials. RAF doesn't seem to use service numbers for those of the rank of Air Commodore and above in the gazette announcements, or that would probably help track some things down. - I've tried searching the LG using just surname (it's unusual so you don't get many "unwanted" hits) and also "Third Bar to Distinguished Service Order". Still no joy. Stephen Kirrage talk - contribs 13:34, 28 April 2008 (UTC)
- I've tried searching on just the forenames too, I'd expect the bar and AFC to use the full names, and also on Ernbry, since in the case of Thomas Blamey I found that the OCR had fairly consistently rendered his name as Blarney, but still no joy. David Underdown (talk) 14:03, 28 April 2008 (UTC)
- Examining the other references used in the article, I see that "Air of Authoirty" gives dates for honours and promotions. I assume these are the Gazette dates, which should make it easier to track things down - though bear in mind that on the Gazette website supplements tend to be "filed" under the date of the original issue, so you need to go a few days either side. David Underdown (talk) 14:07, 28 April 2008 (UTC)
- Yes, taht seems to work, found the AFC and 3rd bar (it's listed under 3rd bar... rather than third bar...). Haven't tried tracking down the final mentions though. David Underdown (talk) 14:40, 28 April 2008 (UTC)
- Bravo. Still not sure why they didn't show up in the original "plain vanilla" search - the print seemed clean enough not to cause a glitch with the OCR. Stephen Kirrage talk - contribs 15:27, 28 April 2008 (UTC)
- Pass, yet if you cut and past the name from the third bar, it does indeed come out correctly, which would imply that the OCR is not blame, the indexing may also be at fault. As you may have gatehred, I've worked out various means of trying to get round the gazette search, but I've never quite worked out why some of those limitations exist.
