Name of town

[edit]

It may sound far-fetched, but U.S. genealogists of the Basye family attribute the name of this town to one of their ancestors, Elizamond Basye, who is said to have joined the crew of the famous British buccaneer and explorer William Dampier in the late 1600s and then to have been abandoned by Dampier in the Philippines, after which Basye is said to have traveled with a Malay prince's daughter to the south coast of Samar, where they settled. See http://www.basye.com/Genealogy.htm. How word of this would have reached America is unclear, but Dampier apparently did circumnavigate the globe more than once. The Wikipedia article gives 1591 as the date of the town's founding and says its name comes from an indigenous word, but this information is largely unattributed and unpersuasively written, so without more support one story seems at least as likely as the other.
