Chronological problem

[edit]

"in the 1460s Bartholomew was a mapmaker in Lisbon", but you give around 1460 for his birth of date.

Il must be the 1470s, rather at the end.

Christophe came to Lisbon around 1475-1476 (his son Diego was born around 1480), so that if Bartolomew came after him, it's all right.

Anyway, in a Spanish book (Fernandez, La gran aventura de CC, it seems that B came to Lisbon before C (who was victim of a wreck, indeed).

The chronology should be fixed precisely, with sources, if there are differences. Jcqrcd44 (talk) 19:04, 14 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hispaniola

[edit]

There should be a section regarding his role as governor of Hispaniola..as far as I know he was responsible as much as anyone if not more so for the genocide there Anonymous8206 (talk) 00:05, 8 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Columbus' Jewish origins

[edit]

Since there has been a recent study regarding Bartholomew's brother being Jewish, it's demonstrable by reasonable correlation that Bartholomew Columbus was Jewish as well. 2A02:2F01:6805:7200:C49C:A83A:47CA:DEE3 (talk) 16:56, 13 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

AFAIK there no actual study that was released (i.e. a scientific paper or any actual data)? Or can you add an actual reference? Quitw (talk) 19:36, 13 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, hold up. We don’t usually claim that every person with a measurable amount of Jewish ancestry has “Jewish heritage”. And quite frankly, having Jewish ancestry isn’t even particularly remarkable enough to warrant being in the opening paragraph.
More importantly, Jewish heritage has meaning. There might be an important story here about him being a crypto-Jew, but having a Jewish ancestors and being a crypto-Jew are completely different stories. Much of Southern Europe probably has some small amount of Jewish ancestry, but no Jewish heritage. Defining this man by ancestors he might not be aware of doesn’t seem to be an accurate portrayal of his life. 69.131.5.40 (talk) 13:43, 14 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
