Somebody claimed that Jones spent an entire half hour debating on Pick a Box whether Warren Hastings could be considered to be the first GG of India. As far as I know this is a gross exaggeration, but if somebody has a reference to prove that he did, by all means undo my edit. Conrad Leviston (talk) 14:57, 12 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It sounds unbelievable but it's absolutely true. In fact, it was longer than half an hour. The question came up on an episode of the show on 8 August 1960, and they had a good 10 minute debate about it before Bob Dyer called a halt and said he needed to get on with the program, leaving the matter undecided. To resolve it, they decided to devote the entire next episode to discussing the pros and cons of the various arguments. Jones goes into some detail about it in "A Thinking Reed", pp.116-117. -- JackofOz (talk) 07:38, 23 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Einstein Factor

[edit]

On last night's episode, Jones said that he regularly checks his WP article to see how it's coming along, and that he uses WP for much of his research. That's a vote of confidence if ever there was one. -- JackofOz (talk) 08:22, 23 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Family legend

[edit]

I can add a family legend to this story. My father, David Littleton, is a cousin of Barry Jones' who was also born in Geelong. The family story that my Dad tells is that it was Encyclopedia Britannica who were corrected by Dr. Jones. I can't remember the quiz show or the question, but the legend is that the Encylcopedia issued an apology to Barry and changed their own data. That would be a typical Barry Jonesism, but it's not at all surprising, though. I've found numerous errors in Britannica, but I've never had the energy to bother to advise them. Wikipedia used to have an article with a long list of Britannica errors we'd collected, but it seems to have vanished. -- JackofOz (talk) 05:28, 9 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Does anyone know exactly where he lived in Geelong, and what Primary school he went to? Was it perhaps Chilwell State School #2016?The Dart (talk) 22:56, 28 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
