Needs a reference to the (unique) "Mainmast Barquentine", Pelican. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.150.116.84 (talk) 18:27, 2 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Highly doubtful claim

[edit]
Origin of the term
'(...) "brigantine", a two-masted vessel square-rigged only on the forward mast, and apparently formed from the word brig.'

This is contrary to what all other sources claim: the brigantine was an earlier vessel and the word 'brig' was a shortened form of it, that later became to mean a distinct (but closely related) type of vessel. (see also the articles on Brig and Brigantine).
