Barnacle and Brant geese myth

[edit]

Barnacle and Brent geese were confused and believed to be the same species until relatively recently (cf Barnacle_goose#Taxonomy_and_naming). This page should make some mention of Brent geese too !! -- jw (talk) 09:16, 18 March 2020 (UTC). This would include adding a link and other modifications, such as clarifications of the naming confusions, to the Brent goose, Canon_Alexander_Galloway, et al.[reply]

    • @Ray Oaks: hello - I'm not objecting to the quality of the information you have been putting into the notes/refs on this Barnacle goose myth page ...
      ... however :
  1. dont' you think that some of this information would be better distributed (i.e. not duplicated) into the Brant_goose and Barnacle_goose pages, as it is of more general interest regarding those geese, rather than sitting hidden here in a reference/note in such great detail ?
  2. shouldn't there be some references to support the information that you have included ?
let us talk please ! -- jw (talk) 22:36, 14 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you I will attend to suggestions while I further modify the entry Happy 20th !Ray Oaks (talk) 10:13, 15 January 2021 (UTC) This is still being edited Ray Oaks (talk) 15:28, 21 January 2021 (UTC) The entry is being updated from archival sources. There are many sources that need to be added from 1200 to modern times. Ray Oaks[reply]

Thank you for the suggestion. I need to get the text finished so that I can see how much space there is for additional photos to relevant section. I will keep the images you suggest for inclusion when I finish the text. Thank you for the suggestion.Ray Oaks (talk) 09:31, 3 February 2021 (UTC) I should add that my aim is to record the important developments in this myth and to provide the interested reader sufficient references/ links to allow further publication. I am aware, as well, that this is a slow process so I am trying to do as much as possible over the next few weeks.Ray Oaks (talk) 09:34, 3 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Several suggestions/issues

[edit]
  • In the lead, Exeter Book is from 10th century, not 11th.
  • The end of the lead contains a blockquote that should probably not be in a lead.
  • The 12th century section discusses 13th century text, while the (first) 13th century section discusses a 12th century text.
  • The formatting at the end of that 13th century section seems off.
  • The section "The Myth in Jewish thought" should perhaps be changed to "in Jewish law" or "in Jewish texts".
  • The 1st sentence in that section, "Almost all of the references in published literature follow a tradition exemplified by Stewart[45] and Müller[46] with regard to where the myth may have emerged." Does not seem to be in the right section, unless it means specifically Jewish texts, in which case it should says so. Also, that claim needs a citation.
  • It also states "The question of slaughtering Barnacle Geese is referenced... around c.1170. Such a date is a century before Gerald of Wales." The first 13th century section seems to date Gerald of Wales's statements to the late 12th century, and he died in the first quarter of the 13th century c. 1223, so it cannot be a century from c. 1170.Yaakovaryeh (talk) 16:30, 7 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I really needs gto review and revise the whole article with new sections and checking for spelling grammar and logical mistakes. I have been off this work for some time with a medical issue. I will return ASAP as I can read thre suggested errors and see others. Thank you for tolerating the sloppy editing. ~~ — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ray Oaks (talkcontribs) 12:40, 27/Feb/'23 (UTC)

Attention: User:Ray Oaks:

Regarding this edit, I looked up The Jewish Encyclopaedia, volume 7, pages 166 and 167, and found no connection. Is this a mistake? Sincerely, -- -- -- 20:45, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I plan to delete the FootNote 70 in the original article. This appears to be where your fault lies. ?? Please confirm to me - if you can. I have made a "temporary" correction that may be further modified. See https://jewishencyclopedia.com/articles/10791-michaelmas-geese ~~~ Ray Oaks (talk) 11:18, 14 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the correction. It seems OK now. -- -- -- 21:34, 14 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
