Number of households
[edit]While not necessarily the definitive authority, the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press Chinese-English dictionary states that each jia was made up of 10 households and each bao made up of 10 jia. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.157.140.149 (talk) 00:41, 10 April 2008 (UTC)
Dating to BCE
[edit]According to Companion to Chinese History by Hugh B. O'Neill, the origin of pao chia "is sometimes attributed to the Legalist official Shang Yang of the Warring States Period (484-255 B.C.). Under the system each household belongs to a group of 10, called a p'ai; ten p'ai formed formed a chia of 100 families, and 10 chia formed a pao of 1,000 families." His source is: Hsiao, Kung-ch'uan.
