Re: doubtful architect attributions
[edit]The bed and breakfast website seems to be the source for an asserted connection with Augustus Pugin, who is the only "household name" in C19 Gothic Revival; nevertheless, National Monmuments Record/ English Heritage quite specifically says "Despite date and quality of design, architect not known." Does Banwell appear in any of the books on Pugin's career? "Sir Elskin Baker" does not fetch up at GoogleScholar nor at JSTOR, which pretty well covers the professional literature. I tried the more recognizable "Elkins" and "Elkin". Is this a misprint from Jonathan Holt, Somerset Follies, 2007:6?--Wetman (talk) 00:17, 7 April 2010 (UTC)
- I've checked Holt & the spelling is as given. The specific sentence is "Banwell Castle was embellished by later owners, particularly sir Elskin Baker in the 1880s." I did get the Pugin attribution from the castle's own history page & a quick search doesn't find any other support - should I remove that claim?— Rod talk 07:41, 7 April 2010 (UTC)
Not a folly?
[edit]Why not? There was no use for a castle in the 19th century, therefore it would appear to be a folly. Gatoclass (talk) 10:50, 18 April 2010 (UTC)
- It's only really a "castle" in the sense that Castle Howard is a castle. In fact it is something of a Gothic revival cross between something like Beaulieu Palace House and Windsor Castle, noting that the current vision of the latter is a creation of the same period and impulse that created Banwell Castle. There are a number of manorial houses in England of the same ilk, some old and some Victorian and even Edwardian. Mangoe (talk) 16:25, 19 April 2010 (UTC)
