[edit]This is a very short article. Are there sub categories of tellers? What about the people sitting behind desks that deal with account issues vs the people standing up that just deal with deposits and withdrawals? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.116.152.42 (talk) 02:52, 17 March 2015 (UTC)
Origin of term
[edit]What is the source of the word "teller", as in bank teller? I can not find out where it came from.—Preceding unsigned comment added by Tioga001 (talk • contribs)
- In Dutch (and probably German) a 'teller' is 'someone who counts (numbers),' I guess it has its roots from there or at least a germanic language... --Rxke (talk) 18:38, 12 July 2011 (UTC)
- A "Teller" is a plate in German. Can't speak for Dutch. But in what countries is the word used? Is it US or British or what? --129.13.72.198 (talk) 01:22, 28 September 2015 (UTC)
- I found this while looking for the British equivalent of what seemed to be a US term. I suspect these people have disappeared. Possibly 'bank clerk'. The original meaning of 'tell' was 'count'. My philology tutor thought the change in meaning to 'relate' came from 'telling one's beads/bedes', i.e. prayers: someone counting off the prayers using a rosary would be speaking them. I'm not sure I'm entirely convinced, but he probably knew better than me. Then there's the meaning 'discern': 'I couldn't tell whether he was joking'. Snugglepuss (talk) 18:49, 14 July 2024 (UTC)

Bank teller vs. Bank cashier
[edit]There is confusion between the positions of Bank teller and Bank cashier. Banks used to have an executive position bank cashier who was in the finance department and expected to have accounting skills and would oversee actions by lower ranking personnel the tellers.
