The numbers mentioned for these countries are way too high. Even the sources attached to them do not show such high numbers.--2A00:23C7:9CA1:9701:48B5:808A:94C3:9E93 (talk) 00:43, 23 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

India

[edit]

I'm missing India in the list of countries with a significant population of Bangladeshis. As stated in the article about Illegal immigration in India, which basically talks about nothing else but immigration from Bangladesh, there seems to be a Bangladeshi community of up to several million people in the Indian state of West Bengal, making it by far the largest diaspora group. Of course I am aware of the fact that most people from Bangladesh and West Bengal share a common ethnicity, but to my understanding, the term "Bangladeshi diaspora" refers to citizens of Bangladesh, not to the ethnic group of Bengalis. If the latter was implied, this article should be renamed to "Bengali diaspora".

Maybe someone who knows the region could merge the information about Bangladeshis living in India into this article? I was just doing a little research on the country today and do not feel competent enough to edit the article. 85.181.234.104 (talk) 17:01, 16 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

India and Pakistan

[edit]

There is approximately 8 millions Bangladeshis in India and 2.5 millions in Pakistan but this page not mention the inner south Asian migration — Preceding unsigned comment added by 196.81.42.171 (talk) 15:43, 11 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Bengalis in Pakistan

[edit]

The three sources [1], [2], [3] only says that there are over 2 millions "Bengalis" living in Pakistan, not Bangladeshis. Hence its more apt to include the figure in Bengali people, otherwise it would be WP:SYNTHESIS. --Zayeem (talk) 10:45, 17 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

You are wrong, you obviously have not read the 3rd source otherwise you won't be writing this. By the way, the term "Bengali" is used for Bangladeshi immigrants. Mar4d (talk) 10:47, 17 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I've read the article, nowhere it says "Bengali immigrants in Karachi originate from Bangladesh". Moreover, people from former East Pakistan cannot be referred to as Bangladeshis. You're just violating WP:OR and WP:SYNTHESIS. --Zayeem (talk) 10:51, 17 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Why are you qouting my comment verbatim in quotation marks? I specifically told you to read the article, and now that you appear to have read it, it is more than obvious that you are editing on an agenda here. The article very clearly mentions Bangladesh as the place of origin of the immigrants, and it even describes the Chittagong colony of Karachi. There is no question of WP:OR and WP:SYNTHESIS here, we state what the sources say. It is not hard to recognise that you have a personal WP:POV. To top it off, the fact that you reverted in factually misleading content into Pakistani diaspora [4] makes your POV more obvious. You have also made more than three reverts, hence I am reporting you for 3rr. Mar4d (talk) 12:49, 17 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Does the article say that there are 2 million Bangladeshis in Pakistan? Nope. At best, it says the inhabitants of Chittagong colony, which is now home to some 700 people, have emigrated from Bangladesh. This is clearly WP:SYNTHESIS.--Zayeem (talk) 13:47, 17 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
So according to you, Bengali Muslims with roots in Bangladesh are not Bangladeshis? Using your logic, this entire article ought to be up for AfD as Bangladesh did not exist before 1971, and many people from modern Bangladesh migrated to other countries before Bangladesh became independent, like British Bangladeshis. They can't come under the category if your logic is to be applied. I have given the sources, and per Wikipedia's rules, we go by the sources, not your personal opinion. Mar4d (talk) 13:58, 17 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Feel free to put up any article for deletion. I'm just talking about the sources that are being misrepresented. I'll repeat my earlier question, where does it say that there are 2 million "Bangladeshis" in Pakistan or all of the 2 million Bengalis in Pakistan are from Bangladesh? I've gone through all the three articles, if I'm missing anything you can even quote the exact sentence from the article that supports your argument.--Zayeem (talk) 14:17, 17 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I agrew with Zayeem. The article in question mentions Bangladesh precisely once, in the context of people travelling to Bangladesh (Chittagong Colony is of particular historical significance for Bengalis as it was a transit point for those arriving and leaving the city for Bangladesh). It nowhere calls the Bengalis in Karachi or in all of Pakistan "Bangladeshis", nor does it say they came from Bangladesh. According to Mar4d's preferred source, those are "people of Bengali-origin" and "Bengali-origin immigrants". If they're Bangladeshi, find a source that explicitly says so. Huon (talk) 14:41, 17 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Huon, if there's a perception here that I am editing in factually misleading content or making up things, that perception is wrong. I preferred to use those sources because they quote figures of the number of Bengalis in Pakistan, and the figures are required for the population table. And I thought it is a no-brainer that former East Pakistan and East Bengal are present-day Bangladesh. The term 'Bengali' is used interchangeably with 'Bangladeshi'. The sources I presented are not exhaustive, there are many more and also an article, Bengalis in Pakistan. For example, there's this source from Express Tribune: Five million illegal immigrants residing in Pakistan, quote: "Around five million illegal immigrants have been residing in different cities of Pakistan for more than three decades. The illegal immigrants, around two million Bangladeshis, 2.5 million Afghanis and 0.5 million other nationals including Africans, Iranians, Iraqis and Myanmars..". Mar4d (talk) 14:52, 17 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, my concerns have been addressed through this source. Thanks Huon for your third opinion. --Zayeem (talk) 15:42, 17 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Number of bengalis in Saudi Arabia

[edit]

In the first paragraph it says there are 3 millions bengalis in Saudi Arabia, though later it states they are 2.800.000 in all middle east, half of which in Saudi Arabia. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.162.88.220 (talk) 09:50, 6 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Bengalis in Pakistan vs Bangladeshis in Pakistan

[edit]

There are two separate groups. The first group (Bengalis in Pakistan) are Bengali people who arrived in Pakistan prior to 1971 and have assimilated into Pakistani society and culture. They number roughly 6-8 million.

The second group (Bangladeshis in Pakistan) are people who arrived in Pakistan after 1971. They roughly number around 3 million. Most of them are illegal. In 1995, Pakistan tried to send them back, but Bangladesh would not accept them.

I hope all this Bengali or Bangladeshi go back to their country. They stand out in Pakistan and look foreign. They do not belong in this foreign land almost 1200 kms away from their native land. They are treated poorly and live in abject poverty completely ignored. Many are now leaving to greener pastures in more welcoming countries or back in their native Bangladesh. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2605:8D80:6C1:2FEB:3888:5AEF:BDB:68AF (talk) 21:03, 26 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Appropriate amount of detail in infobox

[edit]

Wikipedia is not an indiscriminate collection of information. It should not exhaustively list every detail of a topic, even if it is true. This is an encyclopedia, it should summarize accepted knowledge regarding its subject.

Furthermore, infoboxes are supposed to be concise. The list of countries is supposed to be those with "significant populations" of Bangladeshis – a summary of the most important populations, not a long list of every population.

I trimmed the list to countries with at least one one-hundredth of one percent (0.0001) of the total population of Bangladeshis. At current World Bank estimates, 16,300 people. This cutoff has several advantages:

  • It keeps the list reasonably short.
  • There is a substantial gap between the last entry on the list (Libya 20,000) and the next largest population (France 15,200).
  • Adding the next largest population to the list would only increase the amount of the diaspora broken down by country by 0.19%, an insignificant amount.
  • It already lists considerably more countries (21 vs. 12) than the executive summary of the single source that lists more countries than any other, the Ministry of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment's 2017 report on annual migration. It also nearly completely covers that set of countries, omitting only China and South Korea, which are not in the top two-thirds.[1]
  • It is more complicated than a fixed number, but still fairly simple.

I'm open to other suggestions regarding where to set the cutoff, but including any and all countries in the infobox does a disservice to our readers. It is contrary to Wikipedia's purpose as an encyclopedia. --Worldbruce (talk) 21:34, 27 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Badsanta69, and, subsequent to their block, several IP editors, have continued to add countries to the infobox. They have done so even when the population in question is below the proposed threshold above which a population of Bangladeshis is "significant", and without engaging in any discussion of that limit. I'm moving those additions here for now for the general reasons outlined above: that Wikipedia is not indiscriminate, the infobox is supposed to be concise, and the countries/regions listed there are supposed to be those with "significant populations" of Bangladeshis. I remain open to discussion of what threshold constitutes "significant", although the more I think about it, the more I believe it should be higher than I initially proposed, probably between 20,000 and 24,000.
