  • Bally near Kolkata, West Bengal
Bally is a city near Kolkata(earlier Calcutta, India). The origin of the name is from Bali which means sand in Bengali. During British rule in Bengal, the name was changed to its present form. As it is situated in the bank of river Hooghly it had a thriving business of river sand used for house construction. Bally has also got a large jute processing factory. It is a junction railway station for Main and Chord sections of Howrah-Burdwan route. There are other railway stations named Ballyghat and Bally halt on Sealdah-Dankuni route. Bally has a canal on its North side named Bally Khal. This Bally khal separates two districts namely Howrah and Hooghly. Places of interest include Bally Bazar (local market), Samabaya Pally (a picturesque twin-lake township), Rabindra Bhavan (a cultural center in the name of first Asian nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore),Bally bridge (also known as Vivekananda Setu), etc. Tourist places closer to Bally are Dakshineswar temple(situated on the opposite bank of Hooghly it is a temple of Hindu Goddess Kali- made famous by Saint [[Ramakrishna Paramahansa]]), Belur Math(established by world known Swami Vivekananda), etc. Bally is well-connected to Kolkata by subarban trains, buses and ferry service. Bally is different from Ballygunge which is located in south Kolkata.
