Ball State Project

My group and I at Ball State University are working on expanding and creating a more detailed Wikipedia Page on the Ball Brothers. Hey group--the article could use an intro sentence before the table of contents, something like "The Ball brothers were six industrialists and philanthropists who founded Ball Corporation in Muncie, Indiana, and donated funds for various philanthropic projects in that community, including the founding of a college that later became Ball State University." There is also still a grammatical error in the first sentence of the existing page--"when" should be went, and remove "going." —Webster Newbold (talk) 05:11, 12 November 2012 (UTC)

Unconnected with Ball State, I noticed this article was in a very sad state and made a number of improvements to the first section. Webster Newbold, there's no reason to not go ahead and make changes like these yourself-- I basically lifted your suggestion for the intro since it was perfectly acceptable. There is still much work to do, starting with a summary section on the early history of the Ball Corporation, specifically the period of time when the Ball brothers were actually involved with it. Right now, the article dwells endlessly on the Ball brothers philanthropy in rather glowing terms without much substantive history. Also, their is brief mention of a sixth Ball brother, but no explanation of whatever became of him. siafu (talk) 02:34, 6 December 2012 (UTC)

Addendum: according to the source cited [1], Clinton Harvey Ball died in 1869, though the date isn't specified, so he was either 1 or 2 years old. Clears that up at least. siafu (talk) 02:37, 6 December 2012 (UTC)

I'm of a mind now to remove everything starting with the "Philanthropy" section, which is excessively long and praiseworthy. I would propose instead a section on the history of the Ball Corporation, entitled "Ball Brothers Glass Manufacturing Company", since that was the company they actually founded. After this a much abridged Philanthropy section on the Ball Brothers Foundation (which isn't apparently notable enough to have its own article just yet) and a list of projects supported by the brothers both before and after the creation of the foundation. X Family?

Ball Foundation

I'd recommend moving the Ball Foundation content to a new article. The foundation information added to this article really describes the more recent activities of the foundation. Very little of it, other than its founding, directly relates as it is currently written to the Ball brothers themselves. This simple change would keep the main focus of this article on the five brothers. A summary paragraph, with direction to the main article under a subheading, as is done in sub-sections relating to the Ball State University and Ball Memorial Hospital and Minnetrista sections of this article, should do it.
