balinese language
[edit]The Balinese language should be mentioned.
looking at the map
[edit]By looking at the map I can not really find the location of the island of Bali.

terrorism
[edit]- Wasn't there a major terrorist attack at a tourist site? Should that have its own article with link to it from here?
- Was Bali hit by the Tsunami December 2004?

no bali was not hit by the Tsunami --84.9.63.136 17:27, 5 April 2006 (UTC)
See 2002 Bali bombing for the bombing in Kuta, Bali. The island was unaffected by the 2004 tsunami; it's perhaps 2000 km east of Aceh, which was hardest-hit, and is well protected by Sumatra and Java. CDC (talk) 02:02, 25 July 2005 (UTC)
moving images
[edit]I've moved some images to relevant sections, moved the beach image here, and moved the commented-out Bali rice terraces and Rice terraces at entrance to Gunung Kawi Temple here to declutter the article. References for captions are [1] and [2] -Wikibob 03:40, 7 January 2006 (UTC)
"Balinese bow"
[edit]In a play I'm in, it says that one of the characters does a "Balinese bow" to the audience's applause. Does anyone know if this is something specific, or just a general flouncy bow?
A Balinese bow would most likely be bent at the waist with both arms stretched out to one side of the torso and the most important jesture is with the hands. The thumb is pressed back onto the palm, and fingers are outstretched and bent back as much as possible. Think of an Hindu mudra pose using fingers arched back towards your wrist.
History, beaches and arts
[edit]I've removed the sentences about the fame of Bali's beaches and its artistic traditions from the History section. As they stood, they had no relevance to history. -Pgan002 04:43, 13 February 2006 (UTC)
Maybe you should change it to a new section - Beaches or shift it to Geography. Zheliel (I know I am Pro) 23:55, 26 October 2008 (UTC)
- Zheliel, you’ve replied to an old post. It no longer seems relevant. cheers --Merbabu (talk) 01:52, 27 October 2008 (UTC)

legong keraton?
[edit]the picture of balinese dancers in this article is mislabled as legong keraton. The costumes are more in the style of Tari Belibes or perhaps even Chendrawasih?

Some links on Balinese economy
[edit]Here's some random links on the economy of Bali (after some Googling and filtering): http://www.baliguide.com/geography.html http://www.undp.or.id/programme/conflict/bali_crisis.asp
I think this would be a very helpful page (if I could speak Indonesian): http://www.bali.go.id/profil2004/profil_bali2004_e.asp?iType=27

Recently I was involved in a number of long conversations with an Indian scholar holidaying in Bali. He came from the Orissa region of Indian, previously known as Kalinga.
He explained that Asoka the Great, an ancient Indian King, had conquered Kalinga then, following that, pushed forward into what in now Thailand, then into Sumatra, Java and Bali.
The name Bali, my Indian friend explained, is derived from the names of the towns in Kalinga (Orissa). Here is the list of such:

Coffee?
[edit]Could someone write something on Bali's production of coffee through history?
Waterbom Park
[edit]Hey Guys, I just created the Waterbom Park and Spa page so that can link to this page I just don't know where! Scoreed 08:01, 27 May 2007 (UTC)
- I don't really think it is relevant to the Bali page. The fact that you haven't found a good place for it either further suggests that linking it to this article is not appropriate. It's not a bad start for an article though - just not relevant here. Merbabu 08:15, 27 May 2007 (UTC)
Muslims from other island
[edit]Who wrote this following sentence? "The estimated percentage of Muslim residents of Bali from other islands is about 25%." I wonder where he/she got this information from, while even the intensive census concluded only 5.7% of Bali inhabitants are Muslims. Matahari Pagi 08:35, 24 September 2007 (UTC)
Geography
[edit]This should really be exapnded into a full article. We should also mention the beaches and coasts of bali in more detail. 220.238.37.172 (talk) 12:55, 11 June 2009 (UTC)
To-Do List
[edit]OK, to push for GA and then FA status, some ideas of fixing content to go below: Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 20:36, 3 May 2008 (UTC)
- Environment and wildlife section needs expanding
- add some common/endangered/unusual/dangerous animals, as well as some discussion of the habitat. Casliber (talk · contribs) 20:36, 3 May 2008 (UTC)
- Also, a mention of ecological problems.--Merbabu (talk) 00:58, 4 May 2008 (UTC)
- Proper in-line citations for everything
- my eye is currently on the History section (which I could help with quite easily), and the economy section (which is not so easy for me).--Merbabu (talk) 00:58, 4 May 2008 (UTC)
- Fix up images used in article
- For me, this means careful consideration of pics used, bringing in new ones, removing some poor ones, and the eventual removal (ideally) of the gallery. --Merbabu (talk) 00:58, 4 May 2008 (UTC)
Casliber - thanks for taking the initiative. This article could be really good, and deserves to be. General thoughts from me would be to ensure quality. Some areas could do with more quantity, but the History section, for example, I think is long enough - we just need to provide inline cites. Also, i notice the lead. We need to ensure that it doesn't have material that is not covered in the main article. Ie, it's a very brief summary of the article - see WP:LEAD. Another thing that has broad but not total support, is that in-line cites don't need to be in the lead as long as that exact point is cited in the body. This is the case in Indonesia which is an FA.
That's it for now. --Merbabu (talk) 00:58, 4 May 2008 (UTC)
- Could you ad a brief line on the etymology of the name? (I strongly doubt that it has anything to do with any towns in Orissa). PiCo (talk) 03:07, 23 April 2009 (UTC)
Typo
[edit]Can someone with knowledge of the topic correct this: Most estimates suggest that at least 500,000 people were killed across Indonesia, with an estimated 1 killed in Bali, equivalent to 5 per cent of the island's population. Drutt (talk) 06:14, 12 August 2009 (UTC)
- Done. --Merbabu (talk) 08:13, 12 August 2009 (UTC)
