Bailiefton?

[edit]

Once called Bailiefton, in 1795 map: http://www.nls.uk/maps/early/counties.cfm?id=645 then Balieston (one l) in a later map?? --chw 20:09, 10 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

In the 18th Century, an S was printed without the bottom, left curling loop, but had a line through the stem instead, so it looked like a modern F, but Baillieston was still Baillieston! Cheers!Tony164 17:59, 11 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

"The lower case s was written in elongated form at the beginning of a word, in the middle of a word, and when written twice, as in pass. The elongated s can be mistaken for an f, and ss can look something like a p." http://dohistory.org/on_your_own/toolkit/writing.html --thanks found more info--chw 14:39, 13 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Newbottle/Newbattle

[edit]

I understand the confusion but the author of the Statistical Account for Old Monkland Parish refers to Newbottle, not NewbattleTony164 17:29, 29 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Newbottle and Newbattle are purely spelling variations, the former being the older, the latter a modern corruption. (Smur 23:40, 29 September 2007 (UTC))[reply]

Suburb and constituency

[edit]

Baillieston is the Glasgow Baillieston Constituency of the Scottish Parliament? Has there been a careful check of boundaries and dates re this assertion. Suburb and constituency share a name, but they are not the same entity. Laurel Bush.

"Baillieston (55° 50’ N; 4° 7’ W) is the most easterly suburb of Glasgow, Scotland ." This can't be right, surely? Easterhouse is definitely further east. FrFintonStack 01:36, 3 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Health

[edit]

I've removed the health section. It, and its links, dealt witht he east end generally, not with Ballieston specifically, and most of the information is irrelevant to Ballieston as it is socially and economically very different to most of the rest of the east end.86.0.203.120 (talk) 23:00, 1 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Memories of Baillieston

[edit]

== Headline text ==

I am an ex-Bailliestonian, I am interested in the background and history of Baillieston and it's people. Although I have not lived in the village for many years, I still have fond memories of living in Buchanan St, outside shared toilets and four of us sleeping in one bed. We later were re-housed in George Street, it was luxury, we had a bathroom and a garden. 60.240.73.211 (talk) 12:30, 27 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

AYE IT AW SOUNDS ROMANTIC NOO ADAYS, BIT IT WISNAE THEN, GEORGE ST WISNAE MUCH O A STEP UP IN THE WORLD EITHER. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 60.240.73.66 (talk) 11:59, 14 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sure moving from cheaply built damp 19th.century colliery houses in Buchanan Street to the Bauks was a huge improvement in folks living standards. From gas lamps to electricity, from outside toilets to inside with hot running water - it wisnae much o a step up? Wake up and smell the coffee. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Smur (talkcontribs) 00:36, 14 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
