[edit]He was not ethnic Arab since he learned Arabic language from Ibn Fars Razi ! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.169.49.233 (talk) 04:40, 21 February 2012 (UTC)
Ethnicity
[edit]To be honest, I doubt he was of Kurdish or Arabic descent. This is coming from a Kurd, so don't call me biased.
- Arabs have never had a really significant presence in Hamadan as far as I know, and the only reason why he's thought to be an Arab is because he wrote in Arabic;
- Kurds are present in Hamadan, though not in huge numbers, and the fact that he wrote rather negatively of Kurds makes me suspect he's not Kurdish either. Znertu (talk) 12:05, 7 June 2012 (UTC)
Mistaken Identity?
[edit]In the process of expanding this article, I have changed the link to a different Arabic writer, also with the name, Khwarizimi. The original link had been in the article for many years, but appears to have confused two individuals with the same family name. There were two medieval Arabic writers with the name, Khwarizimi, but they lived a century apart. It appears that the article had linked to the incorrect person. My justification for the change follows:
According to reliable secondary sources, al-Hamadani and Khwarizmi were contemporaries. They were in competition with each other, exchanged insults and rebuked each other. (See Hämeen-Anttila, J., Maqama: A History of a Genre, Otto Harrassowitz Verlag, 2002 , pp 18-20 and Prendergast, W.J., The Maqamat Of Badi Al Zaman Al-hamadhani, (1915), 1973, pp 5-6, https://archive.org/details/in.ernet.dli.2015.50447/page/n19</ref>) Therefore, the Khwarizmi named in the Wikipedia article, cannot be Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi (c. 780– c. 850) because he lived a century earlier. Instead, the Khwarizimi mentioned in the sources must be Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Khwarizmi, a 10th century writer, who was al-Hamadani’s contemporary, and is known to have been a resident of Nishapur where he would have come into contact with Al-Hamadani during his sojourn to that city in 990-992. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 49.176.224.116 (talk) 01:47, 20 September 2019 (UTC)
