M52 Cylinder liners

[edit]

Did the American Market M52 have cast iron, Nikasil, or Alusil cylinder linings? Nicholas SL Smith 20:55, 21 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Since all M52 blocks are cast iron, they don't have cylinder liners (sleeves). Only Aluminum blocks require liners. The M60 - M62 used aluminum bores with either Nikasil or Alusil treatments.

Power output for S52

[edit]

The power output of the S52 ist 240KW, 321HP, I think. Max (27.10.2007)

Maybe someone can cite a few magazine reviews of that time or even forum postings where people have gotten these results from stock engines? "Power from the S52B32US is officially quoted at 240 HP but many[who?] feel that this figure is understated" —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.153.162.173 (talk) 08:18, 11 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

No, the figure is not understated, the max power of the S52 is 179 kW (243 HP) at @6000 RPM. However, in practice this is not much less than the euro spec S50B32 which is rated 236 kW (321 HP) at @7400 RPM because power output is almost linear and at @6000 RPM the S50B32 would produce just about ~191 kW (256 HP) which is only 7.5% more. The reduced red line does impact the top speed though (but the top speed is limited anyway). To compare overall performance, you need to also take torque output into account which is also slightly lower (320 vs 350 Nm if I'm not mistaken). -- Rustamabd (talk) 12:00, 25 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Power figures incorrect

[edit]

According to my handbook, the M52TUB25 produces 1 kw less power than the M52TUB28 (141 kw). The main difference is that the 2.5 liter engine produces significantly less torque than the 2.8 liter version.

Bore x stroke, or stroke x bore?

[edit]

Every engine spec I have ever seen in my life goes "bore x stroke". This includes eg wikipedia entries for Ford flathead V8, Ford 427 side oiler, Rolls Royce Griffon, and plenty of manufacturer spec's. At least some of the BMW engine entries, M52, M54 use "stroke x bore" in the tables. Unless someone knows better, I suggest that everything should be standardised on "bore x stroke". murray_baker(at)ihug(dot)com(dot)au 123.211.93.37 (talk) 09:44, 12 December 2011 (UTC) 123.211.93.37 (talk) 09:46, 12 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Picture for infobox would be great

[edit]

Hi. This article briefly had a picture of the engine in the infobox. Alas, the image violated copyright so it was removed. If anyone has a picture of the engine to share, that would be great. 1292simon (talk) 07:51, 19 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
