[edit]The external link to a free sample of these publications was removed. I'm told that it needs to be included into the editorial, if it's of importance. So I did just that. The linked audiobook is not a commercial offer, so I do feel that this is justified and adds value to the explanations. Audiobookworm 17:14, 20 March 2007 (UTC)
- The link is to free material, but that doesn't make it non-commercial - it's still acting as a taster advert for the site. Plus it requires registration to actually get at the audio, which breaks the Wikipedia guidelines on sites requiring registration in addition to those on advertising. Eve 18:11, 20 March 2007 (UTC)
Well, I frankly think that removing this info (for the second time now...) is unjustified, as having a (free) example of these comedy excerpts adds value. But as you seem to be happy sitting on your high horse and playing police, I'll forget about contributing to the Wiki and let you guys play your own game..... bit of a shame, but my time is too valuable to enter into squibbles of that nature. Have fun! Audiobookworm 00:04, 21 March 2007 (UTC)
- I'm sorry you feel that way, it wasn't my intention to 'play police'. On your talk page, I encouraged you to check my interpretation of the guidelines by asking for a Wikipedia:Third opinion - and since you might have a point about the link adding value I've actually asked for one myself to check. Please don't let a minor quibble over links put you off contributing other stuff though. Eve 11:20, 21 March 2007 (UTC)
Third opinion
[edit]The link in question,
- an AudioBooks.com "Completely FREE Audio Books" sub page of
- the Pimsleur Foreign Language Courses Audio Books main page
violates Wikipedia:External links guidelines in two ways:
- Wikipedia:External links#Sites requiring registration
- Wikipedia:External links#Links normally to be avoided - particularly item 3: "Links mainly intended to promote a website."
The free audio books are part of the site's commercial promotion strategy to attract buyers. The link does no harm in a talk page discussion, but it does not belong in an encyclopedia article.
There is also a user conflict of interest here, as illustrated by:
- Audiobookworm's 07:40, February 3, 2007 (UTC) edit with the edit summary:
- (Created page with) "I love audio books and run the website AudioBooksCorner.com where I offer audiobooks for immediate download in MP3 or WMA format."
Audiobookworm, please read the Wikipedia:Conflict of interest guideline to understand what is and is not appropriate encyclopedia editing in your position. Thank you. — Athænara ✉ 12:43, 21 March 2007 (UTC)
