Merge in Gaelic Digital Service

[edit]

As it looks certain the Gaelic Digital Service will be called BBC Alba, I suggest merging the GDS article into a section of this one. DrFrench (talk) 18:36, 4 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A plain move the BBC Alba (TV channel) would be appropriate, since it is a separate TV channel. -- [[ axg ⁞⁞ talk ]] 18:50, 4 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

BBC Alba (TV Channel) would be the best move i think as bbc Alba won't nessessarly mean the TV channel. (MacSteaphain (talk) 09:57, 10 August 2008 (UTC))[reply]

I'd prefer a merge as it would create one good-sized article, as oppopsed to two stub articles and the TV channel would form just one of the services provided by BBC Alba. If the article grows, it could then be split at some later point. But I'm happy to go with the flow if everyone else prefers a seperate article from the outset. DrFrench (talk) 11:09, 10 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No. "BBC Alba" is the name of the department within the BBC which will be contributing to the new Channel alongisde MG Alba. Proposing a merge on the basis that "it looks certain..." isnt a good enough reason. When it actually is certain what the name will be then action should be taken. siarach (talk) 11:45, 10 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It has been confirmed on the BBC webite [1], that the channel will be called BBC Alba, so i think the article's name should be changed to it's offical name rather than th "Gaelic Digital Service". I'm still backing BBC Alba(Tv Channel) rather than merging it with BBC Alba. (MacSteaphain (talk) 08:23, 13 August 2008 (UTC))[reply]

Agreed. Articles should be merged now. siarach (talk) 09:15, 13 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

BBC Alba or BBC Gàidhlig?

[edit]

IS the name of the department BBC Alba or BBC Gàidhlig? I note that at the end of programs like Dè a-nis? it usually says "BBC Gàidhlig airson BBC Alba". I would suggest moving this article to "BBC Gàidhlig", then the article BBC Alba (TV channel) can be moved to BBC Alba. I think the TV channel is the primary topic, and what most people will be looking for when they type in BBC Alba. --Vclaw (talk) 17:16, 23 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I partly agree, I think this page should be under something other than BBC Alba. However I can't find anywhere an actual title for the department in charge of gaidhlig programming. Even if we take the lead sentence "BBC Alba (or BBC Gàidhlig) is the Scottish Gaelic name for Scotland's national broadcaster, BBC Scotland, and the name is generally used to describe the Scottish Gaelic services and output of the BBC.", this is just stating that BBC Alba is the gaelic name for BBC Scotland and it generally describes gaidhlig services of the BBC, which I would argue isn't true any more now that the name BBC Alba refers more to the TV channel. I would suggest merging this article into a section of BBC Scotland and moving the article on the TV channel to here. Unless someone can find a source that actually gives this "BBC Alba" or "BBC Gaelic" entity some description... JoshuaJohnLee talk softly, please 22:57, 3 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I've found a few references to the department as BBC Gàidhlig, eg "BBC Gàidhlig, a tri-media department employing about 120 staff, whose output includes the national Gaelic radio service BBC Radio nan Gàidheal, a wide range of television programming for the new Gaelic channel BBC Alba and for BBC2, and the Gaelic website bbcalba.co.uk." [1] or "BBC Gaidhlig delivers around 100 hours of a wide variety of television programming to BBC Scotland and BBC ALBA. Output is funded by BBC Scotland and MG Alba." [2]. Though I can't find much on the BBC site itself, they just seem to be branding most of it as "BBC Alba".
I think it is worth keeping this as separate article, as it could be expanded quite a bit. Maybe it could be moved to a more generic name, eg Gaelic broadcasting from BBC Scotland? Note there is already an article Gaelic broadcasting in Scotland, but its a bit incomplete/out of date. --Vclaw (talk) 18:16, 4 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I'm all up for keeping it a separate article and trying to expand it, but I think it should be moved to BBC Gàidhlig, and then BBC Alba (TV channel) moved to here. Should we wait for discussion or is it pretty acceptable to assume that there will be consensus? JoshuaJohnLee talk softly, please 18:31, 4 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
(Also, I think we should leave the Gaelic broadcasting in Scotland as it is. I'll get round to updating it later. There could be a link to this article, after expanding it this could be a worthwhile article, and the gaelic broadcasting page we can beef up to be be about more than the BBC JoshuaJohnLee talk softly, please 18:34, 4 August 2011 (UTC) )[reply]
