New Manat

Azerbaijani?

I looked in the Merriam-Webster dictionary (www.m-w.com), and it doesn't list "Azeri". It does have "Azerbaijani" as what the people and their language is called. Can anyone give a reference for Azeri, or should it be Azerbaijani? Ingrid 01:30, 15 December 2005 (UTC)

Azerbaijani is the proper name for the people and the language. Language can also be called Azerbaijani language or Azerbaijani Turkish language, although the second is not official. Azeri is used as a substitute for Azerbaijani. Although it is widely used, it is not proper and some Azerbaijanis even consider it a pejorative. --TimBits 02:24, 16 December 2005 (UTC)

manat/manatı

Does anyone know which is correct? I know the article in Azerbaijani is at manatı, but I wonder if that's some declension, since the banknotes use manat. Anyone know? Ingrid 23:46, 13 April 2007 (UTC)

The word is manat. The suffix is possessive, and is used when another noun modifies it, so Azərbaycan manatı = "Azerbaijan manat-its". A similar construction is used for the Turkish name of the Turkish lira, Türk lirası = "Turk lira-her/his".
