The first sentence in the lead says that an axo-axonic synapse is a synapse between an axon terminal and an axon, but uses a reference from 1956 which doesn't actually describe how the axo-axonic synapse is defined. A better reference, though I'm not sure it's useable here (because it's a tutorial for a class at a University), is at https://psych.athabascau.ca/html/Psych402/Biotutorials/11/part1.html , and says, "Synapses occur between different neuronal structures, and are named based on the site of neurotransmitter release (presynaptic membrane) and site of receptor binding (postsynaptic membrane). The most common synapses are axodendritic (between axon and dendrite), axosomatic (between axon and soma), or axoaxonic (between two axons)." Error in picture illustrating POSITION of the axo-axonic synapse?
The picture at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Axo-axonic_synapse.svg shows one axon's terminal synapsing near but definitely before another neuron's axon terminal, and way further away from the axon hillock or the initial segment, which are where the two places which I think those axo-axonic synapses in fact are. If I'm right about where the axo-axonic synapse is, I don't know how to modify the drawing to show that. UnderEducatedGeezer (talk) 02:30, 23 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
