"Shaped like a large golf ball"?
[edit]I'm trying to wrap my mind around the phrase in the second sentence of the "Building" section -- "Shaped like a large golf ball..." Does the author mean...spherical? That is the shape of golf balls (and most other balls), so I'm not sure what they're trying to convey. Perhaps they meant to say "Resembling a large golf ball...", although that's debatable, since the Globen lacks the characteristic dimpled surface of a golf ball. Can anyone think of a better way to describe the Globen, or should we just remove that descriptor? Bricology (talk) 19:06, 23 October 2008 (UTC)
- Well, isn't the Globen like part of some massive Solar System or something? It could be said that it resembles the sun, but then the color is missing. You could call the Globen a snowball or something like that. Zadora13 (talk) 23:29, 26 October 2008 (UTC)
- As soon as I read that sentence I came to a complete stop. It seems to me to be completely superfluous. The structure is already described in the previous sentence as a hemispherical building, saying it's shaped like a golf ball at best doesn't add anything to the description and at worst causes confusion. I'd say we should just remove it.Maxximillian (talk) 00:47, 17 August 2010 (UTC)
- I found it disturbing too and changed it to "white ball" since it's not obvious by the primary picture, as it's taken by night and illuminated by colored lights. -- Henriok (talk) 23:52, 17 August 2010 (UTC)
- Reads much better now. A simple change made all the differenceMaxximillian (talk) 01:45, 21 September 2011 (UTC)

Name?
[edit]Its official name is now (as of Feb 2, 2009, if I understand correctly) "Ericsson Globe". However, svwiki has kept the common name "Globen" for its article. The question is how to do here, if there is a common name in English ("Globe Arena, Stockholm"?), or to change to the now official/sponsored one. Tomas e (talk) 11:20, 2 February 2009 (UTC)
- I think the article should move to Ericsson Globe since the common English name and the official English name seems to have been the same in the past (otherwise this article would still be called Globen, I guess?). Also, the arena company (Stockholm Globe Arenas) has not changed their name in the press release, so now the company is easier to distinguish from the four arenas they operate. I previosly moved Rocklundahallen to ABB Arena Nord so that the old name redirects to the new, which would probably work fine here too. --Bamsefar75 (talk) 15:25, 2 February 2009 (UTC)
- OK, fine with me, although I doubt the sponsored name will ever become WP:COMMONNAME in Swedish. But that is of course another story. Tomas e (talk) 17:52, 3 February 2009 (UTC)
- Common name is not ericson. Seems oligopolies are throwing hands here. Needs to be changed. --81.39.105.40 (talk) 05:02, 15 May 2016 (UTC)

May 2021 name change
[edit]Alright, so the name has changed again. It definitely needs to settle down to something like Stockholm Globe Arena if it's going to change every few years. I'm going to do this move in a few days unless I hear good reasons not to. EditorInTheRye (talk) 08:06, 19 May 2021 (UTC)
- I agree with you, EditorInTheRye. QubeCube (talk) 14:04, 19 May 2021 (UTC)
- I would say it should be the current name, so as to avoid confusion. It redirects from the name you mention anyway, and to call it anything else would technically be incorrect. It would also not be fair for an important name change like this to not be reflected accurately in an online website as popular as Wikipedia. Braydon r (talk) 15:40, 19 May 2021 (UTC)
- Why is this an important name change? Please base your arguments on WP:COMMONNAME. It's not Wikipedia's role to aid in a re-branding exercise, so if a name change makes people go "what arena?", then we've clearly used the wrong article name. Stockholmers undoubtedly still call this Globen (they're not even renaming the subway station), and the title here should be a translation of that, surely.
- Now, the naming of areanas seem to be far from a straightforward thing, so I used some articles I could find in Template:Indoor arenas UK to see if I could find a precendent (first few listed by capacity, which seems a good shortcut to notability):
- Manchester Arena - Has a sponsored name but it's not used as the main title. 5 sponsored names since 1995
- The O2 Arena - Sponsored name. Seems to have always been known as this since its redevelopment in 2005
- Arena Birmingham - a sponsored name but it's not used as the main title. 4 sponsored names since 1991
- Resorts World Arena - Seems to be an exception to the rule. I know it as the NEC areana
- First Direct Arena - Sponsored name, but the current name has been in place since it was built in 2013
- (Sheffield Arena - no current sponsorship, but yet another article to show that these names are temporary, but a plain old boring 'base' name persist)
- Wembley Arena - Has a sponsored name but it's not used as the main title. This is possibly the most high profile arena in the UK and would compare well to Globen in terms of prestige
- Utilita Arena Newcastle - Another exception to the rule? I lived nearby for a while and this one was indeed known as its sponsored name ('Metro radio arena' back then)

- You would raise a good point, except that this doesn't appear to be a "sponsored name". It's a name change. The outside of the building, advertisements, official websites, etc will no longer use Ericsson Globe; they will use Avicii Arena, because that is its new official name. You say that using this name in the article could cause people to ask "what arena?", but conversely, if it remains a different name, and they then visit the arena in future, they would then be left wondering why Wikipedia is differing from official naming. The official website no longer points to Ericsson Globe, that page has been removed. There are many ways to look at this, but this is not an article written for people in Stockholm; it's for everyone worldwide, so what it is called in this article should not be based on what Stockholmers call it. Sure, right now it is known on the Internet mostly as Ericsson Globe, but that's because it's been that way for several years. Chances are, once it has been called Avicii Arena for several years, that is what you will find it being called. Braydon r (talk) 04:50, 22 May 2021 (UTC)
- Sponsored name changes do tend to be pretty all-emcompassing, i.e. anything that's in the power of the owners to change, they will change as that's what the name deal means. That doesn't change what people call something if that's what they know it as, however. As far as I can tell it's still "sponsored", i.e. a name change that's been paid for, even if Trygg Hansa and Bauhaus don't actually lend their names to the arena (they appear to be the 'naming right partners' if I've understood this clip and the sponsors page correctly).
- Anyway, as we still disagree on this I'll raise a name change request when I have a few minutes to spare, so there can be some consensus. EditorInTheRye (talk) 06:22, 22 May 2021 (UTC)

Bold Records
[edit]Is it really necessary to have these "records" of the Globen in bold? It makes it quite distracting to read. Zadora13 (talk) 02:01, 28 July 2009 (UTC)
- Bolding is now removed. Tooga - BØRK! 11:04, 28 July 2009 (UTC)
