I've updated the definition of "Augmented Matrix" to replace the wishy-washy language about "changing the matrix in some way". Augmented matrices are only shown as appending of rows in any reference I can find, and they are augmented for the purpose of performing elementary row operations in parallel. Augmenting by concatenating rows of matrices to facilitate performing elementary column operations could be useful, in principle, but nobody seems to do that. Rather, the term "block matrix" is sometimes used, and at least one reference (http://nptel.iitm.ac.in/courses/Webcourse-contents/IIT-KANPUR/mathematics-2/node15.html) defines "augmented matrix" as a special case of a block matrix. Which it is. --Husoski (talk) 23:19, 8 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
