Mahia peninsula

[edit]

The following paragraph was added to the article by 132.181.7.1. I've moved it here because I don't think it's written suitably for direct inclusion in the article, but we should check on the issue and update the article if appropriate. -- Avenue 01:12, 25 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

In other sources I have read the Te Mahia peninsula is included in the Auckland province, this may account for the fact that the people of Mahia celebrate Auckland anniversary rather than Hawkes Bay aniversary, it may also be useful to note that the establishment of the Hawkes Bay province occurred in 1853 (circa)and that the people of Mahia were under the provincial government of Gisborne not that of the Hawkes Bay until the abolition of the provinces in 1871. This becomes apparent when comparing fishing quota cra3 is the Mahia quota that does not include Hawkes Bay boundaries.

I found an 1867 map online here. The boundary of Auckland province shown in our article agrees pretty well with this. In particular, it shows that the Mahia peninsula was part of Hawke Bay province. -- Avenue 09:26, 25 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
