"Asians" ethnic group
[edit]The article refers to "Asians" quite a bit. I know we have this terminology come up in the media often, but is it a legit ethnic group? Asia is a very big continent with quite a few radically different cultures - Middle East, South East Asia, China, India, etc. I notice that Sydney has a finer grained breakdown and the word "Asian" is not used at all - Demographics_of_Sydney.
Is there any particular reason not to break it down for Auckland? Anon 21:15, 1 June 2023 (UTC)
- The census lists 'Asian' as one ethnic group, it doesn't include Middle Easterners who are grouped together with Latin Americas and Africans. Traumnovelle (talk) 09:11, 10 April 2024 (UTC)
- The census is also kind of weird, so I think maybe a small change in phrasing would make it clearer that this is census-designated, and distance the tone of the article from the tone of the census since I think the census ethnic breakdown sucks. PlatypusPlatypi (talk) 20:13, 29 May 2024 (UTC)

The photos
[edit]The photos on this page are fricking amazing! Like seriously legit good stuff, speaking for myself as a really, really bad photo taker person...
What do people think about maybe adding a photo of one of the food storage pits on Maungawhau? Or anything else that acknowledges the pre-European inhabitants of this land? 121.98.194.41 (talk) 09:39, 16 December 2023 (UTC)
- By "anything else" I just mean cool photos. Like, what cool stuff do people have out there? 121.98.194.41 (talk) 09:41, 16 December 2023 (UTC)
- Nice suggestion, I've added a photo of Maungakiekie / One Tree Hill showing the terracing. E James Bowman (talk) 04:55, 17 December 2023 (UTC)

Hello SageWikiPro and thanks for the nomination. Unfortunately, the article fails criterion 2b since there are too many unreferenced paragraphs and 15 "citation needed" tags. Examples are the paragraphs starting with "In response to the ongoing rebellion by Hōne Heke in", "Several islands of the Hauraki Gulf are administered", and "Auckland Domain is one of the largest parks in the city". According to criterion 2b, these passages require inline citations "no later than the end of the paragraph". Other maintenance tags in the article include: 2x Update, 2x Expand section, 1x Multiple issues, 1x when?, 1x why?, and 1x permanent dead link. I suggest that you add all the relevant references and address the maintenance tags before a renomination. You might also consider a peer review before another GA nomination.
A few other observations:
- WP:EARWIG spotted several close paraphrases in the section "Modern history"

Planning to add a cross-reference at the top to Oakland, California
[edit]See Oakland, California. That article already has a cross-reference at the top to this article because the two cities are so frequently confused. Any objections? Coolcaesar (talk) 18:59, 27 July 2024 (UTC)
- They're spelt and pronounced completely differently, who is confusing them? Over the past 5 years the only people who have searched for 'Auckland California' have been from New Zealand [1] so they are unlikely to mistake Auckland with Oakland. Traumnovelle (talk) 21:05, 27 July 2024 (UTC)
- Your Google Trends search has a "geo=NZ" limitation right there in the URL, that's why. If you adjust the scope to "Worldwide," it reveals that searches for "Auckland California" came in from 36 different regions all over the world. So the confusion is quite widespread. --Coolcaesar (talk) 21:48, 27 July 2024 (UTC)
- Doesn't work if I remove it. New Zealand is still the overwhelming country of origin for the search and it gets less than a hundred searches a month. It's not something that we need to put a hatnote for. Also Auckland, California actually exists which can explain the searches... Traumnovelle (talk) 22:18, 27 July 2024 (UTC)
- The bigger issue is that you're framing your search term far too narrowly to create the incorrect impression that there is no ambiguity. "Auckland California" fails to capture the far larger number of searches for "Auckland" alone by people under the incorrect impression that "Auckland" (when they are actually thinking of Oakland) is the only notable city with that name. Most people outside of NZ are only vaguely familiar with the country from The Lord of the Rings film series.
- The confusion between Oakland and Auckland is exactly why Oakland International Airport just changed its name, in part because of confusion with Auckland Airport. See the sources I just added to both airport articles, one of which is the New Zealand Herald, which acknowledge the confusion. --Coolcaesar (talk) 02:29, 30 July 2024 (UTC)
- The largest city of New Zealand is more notable than the third largest city of San Francisco.
- The article itself states the name change was not mainly due to confusion and that said confusion was for Chinese speakers, given this is the English language Wikipedia it is not that big a deal if the Chinese language does not differentiate the two cities.
- I think more people are aware of New Zealand than the third largest city of San Francisco, but hey surely that's just my Kiwicentrism speaking! Traumnovelle (talk) 02:58, 30 July 2024 (UTC)
- Well, I have to respectfully disagree. About 8% of Oakland's population and 10% of Auckland's population is of Chinese descent, so this is a serious issue for large numbers of residents of both cities. Also, Oakland has the advantage of numerous mentions in rap songs over the last three decades, especially California Love and Tell Me When to Go, and blockbuster feature films such as Black Panther. --Coolcaesar (talk) 01:09, 2 August 2024 (UTC)
- Again, this is the English language Wikipedia. But I had a look and Chinese Wikipedia doesn't appear to have a hatnote about Oakland. Traumnovelle (talk) 01:15, 2 August 2024 (UTC)

Subtropical?
[edit]Not an expert so not changing main page. I think Auckland meets criteria for Köppen Cfa, humid subtropical. Like much of NZ it is extremely maritime which means that the Köppen divisions do not match all that well. 115.189.87.173 (talk) 01:53, 11 August 2024 (UTC)
- This has been discussed multiple times previously. See the archives. DerbyCountyinNZ (Talk Contribs) 01:58, 11 August 2024 (UTC)
- Under the Köppen classification, you need at least one month with a daily mean temperature above 22 °C (72 °F) to qualify for a humid subtropical climate (Cfa). Auckland's highest daily mean temperature is 20.5 °C (68.9 °F) in February, which falls well short and I doubt would even classify it as a borderline case.
