Johan du Preez

[edit]

Hey, if anyone could do me a favor. Johan du Preez in 1964 competed for Southern Rhodesia, a British colony, not for unilaterally independent Rhodesia. Rhodesia didn't declare unilateral independence until 1965. The flag next to du Preez's name is the wrong one, the flag of post-1965 Rhodesia and not of Southern Rhodesia as it competed in 1964. The other Southern Rhodesian athletes listed on this website (see men's marathon), use the Southern Rhodesian colonial flag and not the post-1965 flag. Southern Rhodesia competed as RHS in 1964 (competing as the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland with Zambia and Malawi, RHO, in 1960, its first Olympics). Rhodesia was invited to the 1968 Games and the 1972 Games but did not compete because of sanctions on the country that led to its exclusion.

Also, there is a little bit of confusion on these websites over Northern Rhodesia and Zambia. Northern Rhodesia became an independent Zambia during the Games themselves, and though the Northern Rhodesian flag marched into the stadium, the new independent flag was hoisted at the closing ceremonies. Northern Rhodesia competed as RHN in 1964. Zambia (ZAM) technically did not compete until 1968.

Anyway, thanks!
