Battle Account

[edit]

I have put in a couple of footnotes about the reference to King Athelstan as the dates in the account of the battle don't match with recorded Anglo-Saxon history. However, after a bit more digging around I found some further commentary [1] which suggests that the battle never happened and that the whole story is a later attempt to misrepresent events at the Battle of Brunanburh. In which case, it would be interesting to know the origin of the name Athelstaneford. Greenshed 00:05, 13 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The main problem with the legendary tale ("army of the Picts and invading Angles from Northumbria in 832AD") is that the Angles (Northumbrians) were already possessors of this area at the given date and the 'Picts'/'Albans' were located generally north of the Forth until taking Edinburgh the following century - as attested on other Wikipedia pages. Perhaps the local pronunciation hides an alternative derivation? 195.194.161.74 (talk) 13:48, 10 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Local Pronounciation

[edit]

Born and growing up in Haddington I always heard it pronounced as Elshinford.Paul1776 (talk) 09:56, 12 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
