Ecologists today have a more general definition of "assembly rule": a rule that gouverns the assembly of species communities (or something similar). Thus the specific assembly rules of Diamond are not "the" assembly rules. Assembly rules as such are not controversial, i.e. most ecologists believe that they exist. An example of a proposed assembly rule:
"No permanent state is a subset of another"
