Cyparissia = Asopus?

[edit]

"Strabo speaks of Cyparissia and Asopus as two separate places; but it appears that Asopus was the later name of Cyparissia." Seems to be WP:OR. Might not the ancient Cyparissia rather be today's Kyparissi? --PanchoS (talk) 20:35, 15 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

    Having been to both Πλυτρα and Κυπαρισσι, I can tell you that in both places Cypress trees are very common, especially along roads and
    between fields near each of these two villages, so it is not surprising that each would have been named such at some point in their
    respective histories. Traversing the length of Ακρα Ξυλι (which forms the west side of Xili Bay) on foot, I came upon a flat-topped
    elevation with a clockwise-spiraling path to the top, less than a mile NW of Πλυτρα. Classic! I say "classic" because that was
    considered optimal in ancient times -- it put approaching enemies at a disadvantage by keeping their shield-side facing away from
    defenders. Locals identify it as the "City of the Parakyparissian Achaeans" spoken of by Pausanias, and as I saw no equivalent at
    the town of Κυπαρισσι on the NE coast of Maleas near Παραλια, I think it likely that they're correct. In any case, Strabo didn't go
    to Asopos, but Pausanias did.
