I just logged on to the IUCN Redlist and they say "Based on estimates of density and geographic range (Nowell and Jackson 1996, Grassman 2001), the Asiatic golden cat's total effective population size is estimated at below 10,000 mature breeding individuals, with a declining trend due to habitat and prey base loss and persecution, and no subpopulation containing more than 1,000 mature breeding individuals.” So therefore they have the cat listed as Vulnerable with C2a (i) behind it. When I wrote that comment it had near threatened as classification. Thanks for changing it. Question to anybody. Why has the name changed from Catopuma to Pardofelis? Annemarie —Preceding unsigned comment added by 125.238.242.216 (talk) 02:18, 16 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Removal of line in first paragraph.

[edit]

The last line in the introductory paragraph was followed by:

, i.e. when a spotted and a plain cat interbreed, the young get plain fur.

This was explaining what a Mandels notion of regressive genes but its flawed. A spotted and plain cat could interbreed and still have spotted fur. If the plain cat has the dominant plain coat and the regressive spotted and he/she mates with another cat that has both the regressive spotted genes, then about half of their children will also be spotted.
