Arab and Jewish Canadians
[edit]Arab and Jewish Canadians are considered "Asian"? 108.254.160.23 (talk) 03:10, 15 January 2013 (UTC)
- No they are not as per statistics Canada thus have removed them - People covered are listed at List of Canadians of Asian ancestry adding this group would make the percentage off by 1 percent. Moxy (talk) 00:57, 8 March 2013 (UTC)
- I removed all of the other Middle Eastern groups. But as for your comment on the History page: "The Jews (Hebrew: יְהוּדִים ISO 259-3 Yehudim Israeli pronunciation [jehuˈdim]), also known as the Jewish people, are a nation and an ethnoreligious group, originating in the Israelites or Hebrews of the Ancient Near East." They are part of an nationality that originated in Asia, hence Asian Canadian. Additionally, the scope wasn't (at the time) restricted to East/South Asians.Evildoer187 (talk) 01:17, 8 March 2013 (UTC)
- The link to the 2006 census is broken.Evildoer187 (talk) 01:22, 8 March 2013 (UTC)
- Bzzzt, sorry no cigar, I just reverted all your deletions and your attempt to use "Asian race" as if there was one.....Skookum1 (talk) 03:31, 8 March 2013 (UTC)
- I resent you calling me a bigot. The Census Bureau we have here in the US classifies groups by 'race', and to my knowledge, the same thing is done in Canada. I did not intentionally delete Malaysians on purpose. That must have been an accident, on my part.Evildoer187 (talk) 03:38, 8 March 2013 (UTC)
- I said your edits and the text you inserted were bigoted, if you take that personally that's your issue; and NO, Canada does NOT classify its population the same way the USA does......"the same thing is NOT done in Canada". There is NO "Asian race".Skookum1 (talk) 06:52, 8 March 2013 (UTC)

This issue has recently been raised again. The official sources (Immigration and Ethnocultural Diversity; Classification of visible minority) do not support Jewish Canadians, as a group being considered Asian Canadians; the WP:BURDEN is on those seeking inclusion to demonstrate that it is. I personally doubt it's that simple, especially given that many not-ethnically-Asian gerim exist, and that many ethnic Jews (e.g. ashkenazim) have been ancestrally non-Asian for multiple millennia.
I expanded the sentence beyond this dispute to give a general summary. I included Arab Canadians as a possible category, because the official examples given included Kuwaiti Canadians, who are uncontroversially Asian Canadian. This allows the material to meet the standards of WP:Verifiability and WP:No original research. FourViolas (talk) 04:48, 25 August 2016 (UTC)
Move discussion in progress
[edit]There is a move discussion in progress on Talk:Afghan Canadian which affects this page. Please participate on that page and not in this talk page section. Thank you. —RMCD bot 22:14, 13 April 2015 (UTC)
Inclusion of West Asians
[edit]Users Dude Master 2, Oxidised Alpha, and several related IPs have repeatedly changed the statistics in the second table so that they no longer correspond to the given source, the 2016 census ([1]). It looks as though they have removed references to West Asians, e.g. Kuwaiti, Lebanese, Iranian, Turkish, Israeli, Syrian, Armenian, etc. Canadians. They have also repeatedly inserted the unsourced definition: "The term refers to a group of people that includes diverse populations, who have their Progenitor from East Asia, Southeast Asia, or South Asia"
, excluding Central Asia and West Asia. I've reverted the changes several times.
Some other countries may list West Asians in a separate category like "Middle Eastern" rather than Asian (see Asian Americans or Asian Australians). I'd like to confirm that there is a consensus to include people of "West Central Asian and Middle Eastern origins" (the term used in the census data) under Asian Canadians, as the cited Canadian census source does. This would also mean giving a definition that includes West Asians in the meaning of "Asian Canadians".
If on the other hand people feel that we should remove them (or other groups) from the data given by the source, and from the article and the definition, I'd like to know on what basis. In contrast to the American definition, other countries also have different definitions of what "Asian" means in statistics and demographics, see the Asian people article. For example, in the UK, "British Asian" generally means "South Asian", and does not include Southeast Asian or East Asian, while Norway and Sweden do include West Asians as Canada does. --IamNotU (talk) 12:53, 17 March 2019 (UTC)
I have again reverted this same change, this time by Rams are, for the same reasons given above. --IamNotU (talk) 14:47, 25 March 2019 (UTC)
- I believe those users were trying to change the definition of "Asian Canadian" to match that of Asian American, as the definition they kept changing it to is identical to that of America's modern definition of "Asian American" (as the page shows, America use to consider West Asians and others as being "Asian"). I understand that the meaning of "Asian" as with all other terms can vary worldwide, as you've said, in the UK, "Asian" generally means South Asian while other countries as you mentioned do include West Asians and other Asians as being "Asian". But this page is about Canada and Canada's census clearly includes all people from Asia as being "Asian Canadians", so West Asians should be included regardless. - Thanks, I'm glad you agree. Fyi, all the accounts and IPs I mentioned above have been identified as sockpuppets of the same user, who has been indefinitely blocked. --IamNotU (talk) 19:42, 20 January 2021 (UTC)
- No problem! After making my post, I noticed that they were a sockpuppet that has been blocked. I'm glad that the issue has been resolved and hopefully this sort of trouble doesn't pop up again. Clear Looking Glass (talk) 03:40, 21 January 2021 (UTC)

"Model minorities"
[edit]Just want to know where they got this from because it doesn't seem to have any source. I as a Canadian have certainly not heard this phrase before and as such I think it is misleading and added with no factual basis. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2604:3D08:7F80:6200:4086:1F9B:792C:DA1E (talk) 21:04, 14 February 2020 (UTC)
- Please don't strike out parts of the article's text. I've reverted that. You can use template:citation needed if you want. But before doing so, please try to find a source yourself, for example with a basic Google search. If you need help adding a citation, just ask. Thanks. --IamNotU (talk) 23:16, 14 February 2020 (UTC)
