Ashton Corners

[edit]

I changed Ashton Corners to Ashton because that's its current name. GNIS includes both historical names and contemporary names. There may be an Ashton Corners on some antique map at the USGS (from which GNIS gets some of its data), but no one in that area refers to the hamlet as "Ashton Corners." Google "St. Peter's Ashton," for example, and you'll see that the school and church refer to themselves as located in Ashton. I was actually stunned to see Ashton referred to in WP as "Ashton Corners." I asked my aunt, who was born in Ashton, if she'd ever heard it referred to as "Ashton Corners," and she said never in all her 90 years had she ever heard it called that. This is confirmed by the Dane County Department of Planning and Development. See Unincorporated Hamlets of Dane County, Wisconsin, for example. Also check the state's official Dane County map. You'll find an Ashton there, but no Ashton Corners. Cassidy's Place Names contains both historical names and contemporary names. It says the following:[1]

Ashton For Ashton PO, which was moved here in 1867 : the crossroad in W sec. 26, SPRINGFIELD. Also called Ashton Corners. Formerly Pickart's Corners.

Ashton Corners = Ashton

It's clear that the residents of Ashton, Dane County government, the state of Wisconsin, and Cassidy all consider Ashton to be the preferred name.—Preceding unsigned comment added by 12.76.153.27 (talkcontribs) 23:23, December 8, 2008

If you want an article about Ashton, no one is stopping you from creating one. The coords in this article point to Ashton Corners, which is to the east of Ashton. --Dual Freq (talk) 23:39, 8 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Regardless of what you aunt in Hartford says, there is an Ashton and an Ashton Corners. No one is stopping you from making an article for Ashton, but this is the article for Ashton Corners, which is located east of Ashton.[1] Town of Springfield plan listing both Ashton and Ashton Corners

You're delusional that there are two separate places. I checked the coordinates and Ashton Corners is 515 feet from Ashton. That's hardly two separate places! Plus you think a water softener ad is more accurate than the official state map of Dane County? These are the kinds of references WP uses-- No wonder it's the laughing stock of the world!

I don't recall saying they were not in the same area, just that you are editing an article called Ashton Corners. When you should be editing one for Ashton. Here is a map. I think Terraserver works in Connecticut. --Dual Freq (talk) 01:37, 9 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Here is the state of Wisconsin's official Dane County map. There is no Ashton Corners on it. 12.76.133.74 (talk) 01:44, 9 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
