We should protect this article for a while, to allow only registered users. This way we will be able to discuss why Catalan makes more sense in this case. There is no way to discuss with an anonymous IP address--Jordiferrer (talk) 21:09, 17 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Misleading sources

[edit]

The two sources given about his views on social views, in the first case, express that he opposed same-sex marriage in the past, and in the second simply state that he gave his party freedom to vote according to their own conscience on the abortion issue. If he supports gay rights, it also should be noticed that he opposed same-sex marriage and adoption by same-sex couples.Mistico (talk) 19:24, 9 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

His nationality

[edit]

The biographies of notable people presented in the WP usually state (or eventually discuss) their nationality or citizenship. What is that of Mr Mas? (Zack Holly Venturi (talk) 23:18, 21 November 2012 (UTC))[reply]

Artur Mas makes it very clear that he is a "Catalan" politician in a speech before the Friends of Europe group in Brussels on November 7, 2012. He says, after a joke at 31:35 in the and answer section that "I don't want to be Prime Minister of Spain" (32:00) "Our aspiration is not to have ministers in Madrid. Of course, in my imagination, I don't think about the possibility of being PM of Spain, because for me, and this is an individual answer, for me it is more important to be President of Catalonia than president of the central government in Spain. I'm not involved in politics to become Prime Minister of Spain. I'm involved in politics to be president of Catalonia and to try to lead a project for our country." He leaves no doubt that he is a "Catalan" and not "Spanish" politician. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lizcastro (talkcontribs) 09:07, 8 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. --Clairó (talk) 17:04, 8 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
As much as any Spaniard would be ashamed to call this "character" a compatriot, Artur Mas is a Spanish politician, regardless of what he himself may view himself as. Systematic Catalan indoctrination is a form of brainwashing the masses, not of changing facts. Artur Mas has made many other claims that have proved to be untrue, so I disagree entirely with taking his word over clear facts. The Catalan nonsense has gone far enough.T.W. (talk) 21:51, 4 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Personal opinions on the nature of Catalan identity do not matter here; if he identifies as Catalan, then he is Catalan, not Spanish. The norm is to call Gerry Adams Irish/Irish Republican on his article, even though he was born and currently lives in Belfast, which is part of the United Kingdom. The same principle applies here. --R3troguy420 (talk) 09:30, 14 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Updating the page & intro

[edit]

The information regarring Mas's political activity more or less stops in 2010. Now, as we know, a lot has happened since ... This urgently needs updating (unfortunately, I don't have time to do it). The pro-independnece turn, the elections of 2012, the establishment of an agreement between CiU and ERC, etc. Another issue is the intro: somehow, I would urge to make it more concise, focusing on the overall picture (his role in the Catalan & Spanish political space, his achievements etc.); as for his political ideology, I would mention the main characteristics, and describe his view on specific issues in one of the (sub)sections. Semiprotected per a complaint at WP:AN3

[edit]

Please see a complaint at WP:AN3 (permalink). It appears to be a practice on Wikipedia to identify many politicians from the region of Catalonia as having Catalan nationality. For example, see Category:Catalan politicians. (Not all such articles have any nationality marked). Most people so identified are also given a Catalan spelling of their name. Reverting of this back to Spanish nationality without any discussion here may lead to action by admins. If you disagree, please use the talk page to establish a new consensus. Thank you, EdJohnston (talk) 02:29, 1 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Change "is a Spanish politician" to "is a Catalan politician". Disruptive editor continued editwarring (now blocked), but I can't revert him. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 124.149.77.181 (talkcontribs) 08:57, 2 October 2014‎

Artur Mas Catalan?

[edit]

It doesn't work here. Catalonia is not yet a state and we can't refer to people by their region of origin without making it clear what citizenship he holds and where that region is. Otherwise confusing for readers.Asilah1981 (talk) 17:42, 28 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Alex Salmond does not really work as a comparable example since Scotland is defined as a sovereign country in wikipedia, and is recognizable within the union and internationally as such. Catalonia is not a country at this stage. When it becomes independent or its status changes, it will perhaps make sense to refer to Artur Mas as a Catalan in defining his citizenship.≈ — Preceding unsigned comment added by Asilah1981 (talkcontribs) 19:29, 28 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

"Spanish Catalan" is the compromise widely accepted across Wikipedia by consensus for describing the nationality of Catalans without denying their Spanish citizenship. Start a WP:RFC at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Catalan-speaking countries. Local consensus here on this article will not suffice to resolve such a long-standing and contentious dispute. Elizium23 (talk) 21:49, 28 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Spanish Catalan would be ok if Catalonia was a territory or population spread across various political boundaries (like Iraqi Kurd or French Basque). Its more complicated with Catalans since identity is more linked to the geographic boundary of modern day Catalonia (in Spain) than to a Catalan "ethnicity" or even language. A person born in Catalonia to Andalusian parents who does not speak Catalan is considered Catalan, whereas someone like Rafa Nadal, (who is from Majorca and does speak Catalan) is not. In the light of this, saying Spanish Catalan becomes a redundancy. If that has been the consensus reached, it is a suboptimal result.≈Asilah1981 (talk) 19:46, 1 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
