All citations were vetted, though better, non-web citations with comparable material could be substituted. Le Prof 50.179.245.225 (talk) 22:03, 22 April 2014 (UTC)
PLAGIARSIM ALERT; some corrections made, but article as a whole must be considered suspect
[edit]In the course of assembling the section on drumming style I consulted the online materials on Art Blakey that accompany Ken Burns' documentary Jazz, that appeared on PBS (where the online materials are hosted). I have found that large blocks of Wikipedia text, here, are cribbed, verbatim—that is, plagiarized—from the PBS page on Art Blakey, which is in turn sourced from the The New Grove Dictionary of Jazz, Oxford University Press. It is impossible to say whether the PBS site was the source of the material, directly, or whether the Grove source was consulted, but this is immaterial. The content at both the PBS and Grove bear clear labels, e.g., that "Copying or other reproduction is prohibited." Note, this theft of intellectual property is blatant, and without excuse. Entire sentences were cut and pasted between the articles, some with no modification whatsoever, and all without quotation marks and without inline citations to even suggest the source.
Because of the blatant nature of the plagiarism, the article as a whole must be considered suspect, until every sourced statement is verified, and every unsourced statement is properly sourced. I am affixing the best possible tags to call attention to the matter at the article head.
To assess this—to see the page as I saw it, before writing this Talk section—go in the Article's View History, and look at the article at end of day yesterday, focusing on the lede, and the "Music before the Messengers" section (parts of which are now gathered in the "Drumming style" section). Then, compare those sections to the following copyrighted PBS/Grove article:
Alternatively, look for the PBS-quoted sentences in the "Drumming style" section; these sentences did not appear as quotations in the earlier Wikipedia article version (i.e., I made these edits today, in conjunction with posting this Talk section).
I will do what I can do, now, on short order to remove the plagiarism while maintaining content. I will also communicate this matter to PBS/Grove, and to leaders at Wikipedia corporate. Le Prof 173.15.61.225 (talk) 18:28, 23 April 2014 (UTC)
Tags calling for referencing were added, in consideration of above issue, including...
[edit]…tag indicating that there are currently no sources whatsoever, to any published source, in this article, listing alumni of the Jazz Messengers. Cross-referencing to other Wikipedia articles that may or may not mention, clearly, and with sourcing, purported facts given here is not a sufficient manner of referencing information appearing in this article. See more significant plagiarism observation, above, which casts a pall over all information not clearly and reliably referenced in this article. Taking on cleaning this up
[edit]I added a bunch of refs just now. I'm taking on cleaning this article up. Feedback welcome. So far just refs to the first paragraph, will use them throughout.

Changed and cleaned up the first two sections. Added numerous citations while trying to avoid overkill. More to come.

Add a new article specifically about the Jazz Messengers group. Cleaning up this article given that (removing a bunch of stuff).

Removed Jazz Messengers Alumni section. It was unsourced and is now covered more thoroughly in the Main Jazz Messengers article (Jazz Messengers (jazz combo))
