Location of some Arrondissements of Haiti on Google Maps using the option to "Explore an area through geographically based Wikipedia articles"
[edit]I was reading something about Mumbai, India and went to Google Maps to get an idea of the location. Ever since I discovered I could learn more about an area by turning on the option to display Wikipedia articles for a geographic location in Google Maps, I almost always turn it on when looking an area up. I've gotten to where the articles I find interesting are the ones that appear to just be out in the ocean. I noticed some of those off the west coast of India in the Arabian Sea as I looked up the location in Mumbai. I was a bit surprised when I saw a number of French place names, since I knew India had a VERY strong British history. As I clicked on them, I noticed that many of them referred to places in Haiti. So I opened the full articles and saw why they were appearing in the Arabian Sea. The coordinates all had the longitude listed as x° y' y" EAST rather than the correct x° y' z" WEST. So I went through all of the arrondissements and checked them to make sure they were properly listed as West not East on their longitude. The list of URLs for the places I changed is:

On two of them, The Vallières and Acul-de-Nord Arrondissemens were also missing the table with the list of "Departments, arrondissements and communes of Haiti" so I added that to those two articles to make them like the rest of the articles. These are all stubs, but still I thought having the proper coordinates would be a good idea. I even have an animated graphic I made showing how they looked in the Arabian Sea. So far, despite the changes I made, these places are still showing up off the west coast of India with the Wikipedia article option of Google Maps turned on. I finished the animated graphic I made showing the screen shot of the issue but since it is from Google, I am unsure about posting it here. It's a screen cap showing what I am talking about above. If I'm reading the Google terms correctly, then using the screen cap is ok. But just to be completely safe, I will just post the link so that if you're interested in seeing what I mean, you can look at it. https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-S1YagLnG-MU/Ue9IdyZ-OAI/AAAAAAAABN8/HnWXhe5XRfE/s512/Animation1.png WayneyP (talk) 03:44, 24 July 2013 (UTC)
