Article name
[edit]There is a discussion being held at Talk:Northern Rail#Article name post 1 April 2016 as to how this article and the Northern Rail articles should be named. Morr747 (talk) 03:09, 22 February 2016 (UTC)
Crystal ball tag on Northern Connect section
[edit]Why was the crystal ball tag placed on the Northern Connect section? The only thing I can see that is unsourced is the weird colour choices of the routes - do these refer to a map somewhere? I will remove them and the tag unless anyone has any objections. Absolutelypuremilk (talk) 20:02, 18 June 2018 (UTC)
- That was me, and it was in response to this edit by DrFrench (talk · contribs), which is entirely unsourced. It's a fair bet that there will be a service from Manchester Airport to Blackpool North. But how do we know, for example, that those specific types of rolling stock are to be used on each route? --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 07:34, 19 June 2018 (UTC)

Northern has not been nationalised
[edit]I have corrected the article, Northern has *not* been nationalised, it still exists as a private company (though will probably go bankrupt or be wound up). What has happened is that Northern has been stripped of its train operating franchise, and the government has taken over running the trains. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jgharston (talk • contribs) 22:42, 29 January 2020 (UTC)
Article name post 1 March 2020
[edit]While it hasn't been confirmed what the brand will be for the new Northern franchise,[1] there is a reasonable chance the existing brand will be retained, as the DfT has been specifying the name in recent franchise contests the brand under which the franchisee will trade under to avoid expensive rebranding exercises in the future as on page 100 of the (e.g East Midlands Railway ITT. Hence Abellio Great Anglia, First Great Western and First TransPennine Express were rebranded even though the incumbent operators retained the franchises.
Should it continue, then the DFT operated TOC would become the WP:PRIMARYTOPIC and this article would need to be moved to accommodate, perhaps to Northern (train operating company 2016-2020) along the same lines as Thameslink (train operating company 1997-2006)? Obviously will be irrelevant should a different name, Northern Trains for example, be adopted.
Nothing should be actioned until on or after 1 March and will need to go through the WP:MOVE process, but thought it perhaps worthwhile providing a forum to discuss before going down that process once the trading name is confirmed. Kloncoop (talk) 02:47, 30 January 2020 (UTC)
Moving article to 'Northern (Arriva Rail)'
[edit]I see Maxopolitan moved the page to 'Northern (Arriva Rail)'. NevHil43 then moved it back to its original name. I fully agree with moving the page, as 'Northern' is still used as the brand name and will just confuse readers. Although I think it should be moved, WP:MOVE says that we should establish consensus here first before moving it. Pinging Pedroperezhumberto and Anamyd, who have both made significant contributions over the past few days. Thanks, PinkPanda272 (talk/contribs) 07:49, 2 March 2020 (UTC)
- I too agree as per the reasons you said, I say that the page should be renamed/moved to either 'Arriva Rail North' 'Northern (Arriva Rail)' or 'Northern Rail (Arriva)' with the third probably not being a good name as it would possibly confuse people between this franchise and Serco Abellio's franchise. Feel free to propose any different names if you wish. Pepper Gaming (talk) 17:48, 2 March 2020 (UTC)
What about simply Northern (Arriva)...? Anamyd (talk) 20:55, 2 March 2020 (UTC)
- Another good possible name too. Pepper Gaming (talk) 23:27, 2 March 2020 (UTC)
- Any of these sound good, although I think 'Northern (Arriva Rail)' would work better over 'Northern (Arriva)' as it shows that there is a definite connection to the railways (like Northern Trains, Northern Rail (Serco-Abellio) and the current name of this article Northern (train operating company)). Arriva Rail North could work too, but runs the risk of being confused with Arriva Trains Northern. PinkPanda272 (talk/contribs) 07:22, 3 March 2020 (UTC)
- Problem with Northern (Arriva) or similar is what happens if Arriva win the franchise in the future? Perhaps Northern (train operating company 2016-2020) as suggested in the previous section by Kloncoop would be better. NevHil43 (talk) 11:55, 4 March 2020 (UTC)

- In that case then I think it should be either called Northern (Arriva TOC 2016 - 2020) or Arriva Rail North (the legal name of the TOC) and I think the latter of the two I suggested is better. Pepper Gaming (talk) 19:41, 4 March 2020 (UTC)
- Agreed, Arriva Rail North sounds good. PinkPanda272 (talk/contribs) 15:49, 5 March 2020 (UTC)
- I mean the article was once called ARN back in 2016 before the franchise officially launched so it would be nice to have that as the name of the article. Pepper Gaming (talk) 20:23, 5 March 2020 (UTC)
- Support Arriva Rail North. NevHil43 (talk) 10:28, 6 March 2020 (UTC)

I'm going to start the move, per WP:MOVE, now that we have a consensus for Arriva Rail North PinkPanda272 (talk/contribs) 20:22, 6 March 2020 (UTC)
- I hadn't realised the intended page name is already a redirect, and because it has more than a one-line page history (see WP:MOR), I don't have the authority to move it. I will therefore list it at WP:RM. PinkPanda272 (talk/contribs) 20:35, 6 March 2020 (UTC)
