Special Category for British Motorcycles
[edit]As part of the Motorcycling WikProject I am working though all the missing articles and stubs for British Bikes. To make things easier to sort out there is a special category for British motorcycles. Please will you add to any British motorcycle pages you find or create. It will also help to keep things organised if you use the Template:Infobox Motorcycle or add it where it is missing. I've linked the Category to the Commons British Motorcycles so you could help with matching pics to articles or adding the missing images to the Commons. Merger proposal: Ariel (vehicle) into Ariel Motorcycles
[edit]The subject of the article Ariel (vehicle) is the company that makes Ariel Motorcycles. However, the history is the same for both articles and the company is far better known for its motorcycles than for its cars.
I propose that the articles Ariel Motorcycles and Ariel (vehicle) be merged into Ariel Motorcycles.
Sincerely, SamBlob (talk) 17:11, 22 March 2014 (UTC)
Inconsistency
[edit]I have been trying to prepare a unified article in preparation for the merge (the above proposal being unchallenged), but there are many inconsistencies between the two articles.
Ariel (vehicle) says: "In 1901 the first Ariel motorcycle proper was launched, powered by a 211 cc Minerva engine," while this article says: "In 1902, Ariel produced its first motorcycle, which had a Kerry [1] engine with an innovative magneto ignition and a float carburettor."
Ariel (vehicle) does not mention Westwood Manufacturing, which this article says merged with Ariel in 1896.
Ariel (vehicle) claims that Components Ltd. bought Ariel in 1902 while this article says that the owner of Components Ltd., Charles Sangster, bought Ariel in 1905.
Ariel (vehicle) claims that Ariel was merged into the BSA group in 1951 while this article says the BSA bought Ariel in 1944.
These and more need to be sorted out before the merge can begin.
Sincerely, SamBlob (talk) 15:31, 9 April 2014 (UTC)
- I'm confused about when BSA bought Ariel. Birmingham Small Arms Company says it was 1944, and I can find sources for that year.[23][24] This article says 1951. A Google seach for "BSA Ariel 1951" gives me [25], but I can't be sure if that's been influenced by this article. I think perhaps the confusion is that Ariel and Triumph were both owned by Sangster; Ariel was bought by BSA in 1944 and Triumph in 1951. This article says that Ariel had purchased Triumph in the 1930s, but perhaps it would be more accurate to say, as Triumph Engineering does, that Ariel's owner purchased [the motorcycle division of] Triumph.-gadfium 18:31, 16 December 2017 (UTC)
Wire wheel inventor
[edit]Hmmm...James Starley and William Hillman invented the wire spoke wheel? The page about wire wheels says different and has a citation: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wire_wheels#cite_note-4 Yevad (talk) 09:39, 5 August 2014 (UTC)
- Is the revised text any better? Sincerely, SamBlob (talk) 13:14, 5 August 2014 (UTC)
