District of Strathclyde region

I believe there was an Argyll and Bute district of Strathclyde region, 1975 to 1996, but this is not mentioned in the article. There is mention of a boundary change in 1996, re Helensburgh and Lomond, when the name of the district became the name of a unitary council area, but I imagine there may have been other boundary changes. Eg: was Arran within the Argyll and Bute district? If not: where was it? Laurel Bush 12:46, 2 February 2006 (UTC).

According to Schedule 2 of the LGA(S) 1973, the Cunninghame district of Strathclyde was composed of:

• In the county of Ayr--the burghs of Ardrossan, Irvine, Kilwinning, Largs, Saltcoats, Stevenston, the districts of Irvine, Kilbirnie, West Kilbride; those parts of the designated area of Irvine New Town within the Ayr and Kilmarnock districts.
• In the county of Bute--the burgh of Millport; the districts of Arran, Cumbrae.

Plus, Argyll and Bute was just called Argyll and was made up of:

• In the county of Argyll--the burghs of Campbeltown, Dunoon, Inveraray, Lochgilphead, Oban, Tobermory; the districts of Cowal, Islay, Jura and Colonsay, Kintyre, Mid Argyll, Mull, North Lorn (except the electoral divisions of Ballachulish, Kinlochleven), South Lorn, Tiree and Coll.
• In the county of Bute--the burgh of Rothesay; the district of Bute.

Districts meaning the 1930-1975 entities created at the time of abolition of parish councils? An article specifically about those districts might be useful, but I dont know what to call it, given existing widespread use of district to mean the 1975-1996 entities. Or perhaps it should just be a section in Local Government (Scotland) Act 1929. Laurel Bush 17:28, 2 February 2006 (UTC).

Whatever the article is called there is then the question of how it might be pipe-linked, or linked via a redirect. District (Scotland) is currently a redirect to Regions and districts of Scotland. Perhaps it (District (Scotland)) should be a disambig page. Laurel Bush 10:41, 3 February 2006 (UTC).

Towns and villages

This list includes a very comprehensive list of settlements including some places that hardly qualify as hamlets. However I have removed Colgrain and Stuckgowan as I am unable to find any map location for settlements of either name.--JBellis 18:30, 14 October 2006 (UTC)

Coastline

What is the reference to the coastline length? French Wikipedia elaborate article about Argyll and Bute specify the coastline length as 3,000 km not miles. Avihu (talk) 17:19, 16 March 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for the source. The correct number, according to the site, is 3,723 kilometres (2,313 miles). Closer to the french version (more than 3,000 kilometres) than the English vesrion (4,800 km). Avihu (talk) 06:37, 18 March 2012 (UTC)

I suggest that the reference to coastline length should be removed. Coastline length is a fractal quantity and diverges as you try to measure it more accurately, i.e. when you user finer and finer measuring scales. This isn't just a theoretical problem; the coastline length can't be meaningfully stated without stating a measuring scale. See "Coastline Problem" in teh article Coast. Controversies

As this is an article about the council area generally, and not the local authority specifically, should this section be as prominent – or, indeed, included at all? They both seem pretty minor stories as far as a general overview of Argyll and Bute goes, and the NeverSeconds case has its own article anyway. If this section is maintained, it needs a good deal of detail pruning out, at least. Jellyman (talk) 11:06, 20 June 2016 (UTC)
