Maximilian Eugen in late 1918
[edit]At the end of World War I Maximilian escaped from Austria before he could be arrested. This is not a valid information. The members of the Habsburg family have not been persecuted by the new Republic of Austria. But in spring of 1919, the so called Habsburg Law stipulated they could only live in Austria if they cancelled their membership in the Habsburg Dynasty with its monarchial aspirations and if they declared themselves loyal citizens of the republic. Obviously Maximilian Eugen Habsburg-Lothringen (such his official name as of April 10, 1919 according to the Law of the Abolition of Nobility passed by the Constitutional National Assembly on April 3, 1919) chose to live outside of Austria. ~~ Wolfgang J.
