After whom was the road named?
[edit]If one of the family fought or was a general of distinction in that war with Lord Elgin that might provide an explanation, as would an Arbuthnot in the Colonial service. Possible candidates are the Generals
- Charles George Arbuthnot 1824-1896
- Charles George James Arbuthnot 1801-1870
- George Alexander Arbuthnot 1830-1896
- George Bingham Arbuthnot 1803-1867
- Henry Thomas Arbuthnot 1834-1919
- Robert Arbuthnot 1773-1863
- Thomas Arbuthnot 1776-1849
- William Arbuthnot (Major-General) 1838-1893
It was not named after John Bernard Arbuthnot (1875-1950), ADC to Governor General, HK because it is mentioned in documents dated 1874. - Kittybrewster 19:08, 3 February 2007 (UTC)
Arbuthnot family
[edit]The word "Arbuthnot" is not a common English word, for sure, but how do we really know the road is named after a member of the Arbuthnot family? (The article is categorised under "Arbuthnot family") Hong Qi Gong (Talk - Contribs) 00:47, 7 February 2007 (UTC)
- Roads tend to be named after people. The only way Arbuthnot is a word at all is as a surname, ergo one can infer that the road is named after a member of the said family.--Couter-revolutionary 02:22, 7 February 2007 (UTC)
- Right, I'm sure it's named after someone. But does everybody with the name "Arbuthnot" belong to the famous Arbuthnot family? Hong Qi Gong (Talk - Contribs) 06:13, 7 February 2007 (UTC)
- No. But the less famous Arbuthnot families are also all well recorded [1] (a project made possible by the rarity of the name) and it seems most improbable that the road was named after one of them. - Kittybrewster 08:46, 7 February 2007 (UTC)
- Improbable maybe, but linking the two without any evidence is speculation and not fit for an encyclopedia. Nuttah68 17:36, 7 February 2007 (UTC)
- Improbable to an enormous extent. The other branches simply did not travel globally (excluding those who emigrated). Besides which the category Arbuthnot family covers all branches and members of the family. Is it time to withdraw the afd? - Kittybrewster 18:04, 7 February 2007 (UTC)
- No, not 'Improbable to an enormous extent'. The article on the name clearly states the family is named after the 'village of Arbuthnott'. So equally probably the street could be named after a location known to someone in the administration at the time of naming, as happened in many other places. As I have said already linking the street to the family without any evidence is pure speculation and not fit for an encyclopedia. As such the link should be removed. Nuttah68 19:35, 7 February 2007 (UTC)
- Well, the Arbuthnott article states that it is only a small village. Even if the street really is named after that village, the village is probably only known because of the Arbuthnott family. I would think that chances are, the street is named after either the family or someone in the family. But to be very technical about issue, there should be some verification that the street was named for the family if we're categorising it as such. Having said that, I just want to say that I don't really think this is such a big deal either way. Hong Qi Gong (Talk - Contribs) 21:36, 7 February 2007 (UTC)
- The street will not have been named after the village which was spelled with two ts. There was a hamlet called Arbuthnot but it was built and named after Arbuthnot Road. We are working on discovering which member of the family. I hope somebody may find the road from the category and help us with more detail. :) - Kittybrewster 05:20, 8 February 2007 (UTC)
- 'I hope somebody may find the road from the category and help us with more detail.' That is the problem. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia and not a genealogical message board. Information here should be fact, not guesswork in the hope that a fact may appear to support it. The spelling of the name is irrelevant, it would hardly be the first place/street mispelt because a clerk did know the correct spelling (cf Lempster, NH named for the family of Sir William Fermor, Lord Leominster or Pomfret, Connecticut and Pomfret, Vermont named after Pontefract) . Unless there is a sourced reference the link is guesswork and inappropriate. Nuttah68 17:50, 8 February 2007 (UTC)
- There was no place called Arbuthnot after which the road could have been named. All members of the Arbuthnot family are embraced by the category Arbuthnot family so the fact that we are uncertain precisely which seems irrelevant. - Kittybrewster 22:11, 8 February 2007 (UTC)
- Misspellings are not uncommon, the family article claims that the name comes from the village of Arbuthnott, so there clearly is a somewhere rather than a someone the road can be named after. I'll [citation needed] it and consider what to do next if the claim cannot be supported.Nuttah68 17:17, 9 February 2007 (UTC)

What a stupid argument. Of course the road in Hong Kong is not named after a village, nor would it be named after some poor relation digging peat in Orkney. It is quite obviously, following the British tradition in just about every city they ever built, named after a famous personage of that family/surname. Argument for argument's sake. George Arbuthnot?
[edit]Do we have a source to say that the road was named after George Arbuthnot? Hong Qi Gong (Talk - Contribs) 23:39, 16 March 2007 (UTC)
Main thoroughfare?
[edit][2] I work less than a kilometre downhill from this street and I don't think I've ever even set foot on it. The main roads in Central are Queen's, Des Voeux, Connaught, and maybe Hollywood. This is a 300-metre long side street that runs up alongside the old police station. cab 23:34, 14 May 2007 (UTC)
