Aquiel
[edit]I'm sorry to say this but I think that Aquiel may be the worst episode of the 6th season of Star Trek, The Next Generation. Sometimes when I watch this production, it feels like Lieutenant Aquiel Uhnari was thrown into this episode simply to give Geordi LaForge a romantic diversion. The overall production is poor and subpar....and the killer organism is in Aquiel's dog? Oh that's just great! What a downer. There was just nothing special about this episode sadly. But of course this is simply my opinion. Feel free to disagree. Cheers, --Leoboudv (talk) 06:47, 17 June 2012 (UTC)
- @Leoboudv: the entire episode is designed as a paean or in-joke reference to the soap opera genre. The last notes of the musical score three seconds before the episode fades out gives away the punch line. Go back and replay the fade out. When I first heard it I laughed out loud. I'm surprised everyone missed this, as I haven't seen it discussed anywhere. They chose Renée Jones to play Aquiel right at the same time as her character appeared on Days of Our Lives (February 1993). If you go back and watch "Aquiel" again, you will pickup on the use of deliberate soap opera tropes. First, Aquiel is thought to be dead, but she's brought back by the Klingons. She has memory loss. She's falsely accused of a crime and rescued by Geordi. Riker confronts Geordi and tries to protect him (watch this scene carefully, it is taken directly from a soap opera). Beverly discovers the "evil twin" in the form of a coalescent organism that has "copied" Keith Rocha. And on and on. Folks, the writers deliberately did this, and not a single Trek fan picked up on it. Viriditas (talk) 10:37, 23 June 2014 (UTC)
