In the interview "Caml with Gérard Huet" on Software Engineering Daily http://softwareengineeringdaily.com/2015/11/06/caml-with-gerard-huet/ Huet distinguishes or prefers applicative programming in his remarks about the notion of functional programming in the late 1970's or early 1980's, "what is mostly advertised in functional programming is actually applicative programming, meaning that the result of your computation does not really depend on some kind of state, like the state of some kind of global memory. It is more like the evaluation of a mathematical expression. So we like applicative programming for at least two reasons. One reason, that it is easier to reason about applicative programs because they are static expressions so the usual mathematical techniques apply. You don't have to take care of complex state.
