[edit]"The first bishop of Nanjing was Allessandro Ciceri of Milan, a Jesuit, consecrated at Macau on 2 February 1696. His last successor was Gaietano Pires-Pireira, a Portuguese Lazarist (d. at Peking, 1846)."
In fact, the diocese of Nanjing first had the Apostolic Vicar Ignace Cotolendi. Then it had the bishop of Nanjing, Luo Wenzao, who was notable for being the first Chinese-born bishop. Alessandro Ciceri was only the second person to hold the title of Bishop of Nanjing and the third bishop to administer the diocese.
Pires-Pireira was not the last bishop, either.
