POW camp

wasn't this the site of a POW camp during WW2? Kingturtle 21:55, 29 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Aomori city emblems, tree, bird, flower, insect

The Japanese and English official website of Aomori, Aomori contradict eachother on this. :(

They agree on:

Tree

Aomori Todomatsu (Aomori white fir)

Flower

Hamanasu flower ("sweet briar")

They disagree on (seemingly):

Bird

English page says:

Aomori's municipal bird is the uto (hornbilled puffin). The bird's historical connection with Aomori dates right back to the city's origins in the small fishing village of Uto. Recently, although this bird can be more readily observed in Hokkaido, there have been confirmed spottings near Aburakawa fishing port.

Japanese page has a list of "Tree, flower, bird, insect" on the mainpage where bird is:

ふくろう (owl)

Insect

Nothing on the English page, Japanese says:

ホタル (Firefly)

Can anyone find more on this? JeroenHoek 13:32, 6 Jun 2005 (UTC)

The city's bird and insect seem to be newly established after the merger with Namioka town in April 2005 [1]. The English page may be not updated yet. --Pitan 14:34, 6 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Ah, thank you. I'll see if I can write up a paragraph on those. JeroenHoek 15:15, 6 Jun 2005 (UTC)
By the way, my references tell me that the utō (善知鳥) is Cerorhinca monocerata, or the Rhinoceros Auklet. It seems people used to think that the bird could not be found around Aomori city. However, it appears that there have been recent (1997, 1998) sightings in or around the city (around Aburakawa port - I don't know whether it's in the city). Atsi Otani 16:02, 8 Jun 2005 (UTC)
