Of all three variants, Antipope Gregory XVII should be utilised for the merged content, in order to fit existing Wikipedia convention. (Check out some other antipopes.) Followers of the Gregories XVII could oppose this decision and their voice on it matters too but, until someone voices their doubt on this actually, let's simply follow the convention.
For me personally, it's both acceptable and practical to call the Vatican man pope and Gregory XVII—antipope. I use words primarily as hash keys for meanings rather than meanings. In this approach, the world will spare more tongue and, therefore, save more CO2, if we call Gregory XVII antipope, than if we call by this term Benedict XVI.
Unfortunately, Antipope Gregory XVII has already been "booked" as a redirect for Clemente Domínguez y Gómez. I'm sure this can be rectified. Perhaps that page should be made a disambiguation one.

Another option is applying WP:R#PLA. ("If there is an ambiguity associated with a redirect, one of the redirect disambiguation templates [at the redirect landing page –6birc] may be useful.")
However, "Turning redirects into fleshed-out encyclopedic articles is wholly encouraged at Wikipedia. Be bold." (WP:RFD) Okay then! I'm adding the "merge" template to the redirect.

The page's status as a redirect is uncertain. Out of uncertainty whether to add the "orphan" template... I'm not adding it. The basis for this decision is my moral principle, whose merit is quite well reflected in this formulation: if appropriateness of choices is indeterminable, follow one which seems most pleasant.

An example for keeping a potential "redirect page" as a "disambiguation page": Karl Pribram.

- I'd agree to merge the content at Antipope Gregory XVII with redirects from Pope Gregory XVII and Gregory XVII. When (if) a (official Roman Catholic) Pope Gregory XVII is appointed then undoubtedly an article will be written about him over that redirect. I'd say the redirect to Clemente Domínguez y Gómez can be overwritten, outside of the world of RC schisms is he more notable than the others? Tassedethe (talk) 16:54, 2 July 2008 (UTC)
- Per this discussion, I have changed this into a disambiguation page, and have changed Pope Gregory XVII and Gregory XVII into redirects pointing here. How's it look? SlackerMom (talk) 17:38, 24 July 2008 (UTC)
- Looks good. I just changed dab to hndis. Thanks Tassedethe (talk) 08:18, 25 July 2008 (UTC)
